"College" at Oswego

I have to question this article's title (being an alumnus thereof). The institution is a college, not a university, so it's official name is "SUNY College at Oswego" (with the words of SUNY spelled out for this article, of course). The same would apply for the other colleges in SUNY, including but not limited to Oneonta, Plattsburg, Fredonia, New Paltz. But the word "College" wouldn't appear in SUNY's universities: Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook.Fwgoebel 03:04, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Not really. A university consists of several "schools" and "colleges" under it. For example, at the University at Albany, there is under it the School of Education (which I attended), the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Business, and more. A college would instead have divisions under which majors would fall. In fact, telephoning Oswego, a receptionist would answer (in the days when a voice operator would answer) "College at Oswego". • It's a college that is part of the state university system. According to the SUNY website, Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook are "University Centers", and Cortland, Geneseo, Potsdam, Old Westbury, etc., are University Colleges. The "State University" in the name refers to the state university system that was set up in 1948, of which the College is a part. If you look at the charters that the Regents granted the institutions that constitute the State University (I've heard they're stored at the SUNY administration building in downtown Albany), you'll likely see "State University of New York, College at Oswego". To complicate things further, some of the schools have undergone "re-branding" efforts (e.g., "Binghamton University", "University at Albany", "Geneseo State University"), so what the "official" name is depends on whether you're talking to someone involved in the establishment of the state university, somone at the institution currently, the Regents, or someone in the state Department of Education.

Cleanup

I attempted to reduce this to what may be considered a reasonable excerpt. I've also started to make this less promotional and more factual, but was limited by my personal knowledge of the school. Additional cleanup is needed by those more in the know. --Igoldste 00:36, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

I redirected searches for the universities library to the main page. The section is relevant to the school, but it needs references to be accurate. If anyone can do that, I would appreciate it.keystoneridin! (talk) 04:29, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Self Promotion of "Webseries"

I just removed a section that was promoting a webseries produced by SUNY Oswego students. The link that appeared to promote otherwise obscure individuals that does not significantly add to the clarity or quality of the article. In addition to poor template use, it was clearly just a means for self-promotion. Please bring up any opposition to this removal here before reverting it. Done. This error apparently existed since almost a year; thanks for bringing it up. Since this is the only article to use Template:Mem/a, one might think about replacing it entirely. Huon (talk) 12:33, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
