Talk:Starting rate of UK income tax

Untitled edit

I only came across this article because of the merge proposal. It would get far greater exposer to editors and viewers if it was moved with this link becoming a redirect. The main article gets on average 500 hits a day GameKeeper (talk) 22:36, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think this article covers a topic that is important enough to stand alone from the main article. It just needs some attention. AnthonyUK (talk) 21:29, 3 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Detailed breakdown of winners/losers? edit

Can I add a table here of which income classes won/lost out under the proposed changes? It's original calculation, but hardly original research - since it's just running numbers through a calculator. --foolsjourney —Preceding comment was added at 14:17, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Move edit

I'm going to be WP:bold and move this page to the more accurate Starting rate of UK income tax. --Lo2u (TC) 21:36, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Does this title make sense? There still much a starting rate for UK income tax. That isn't what was abolished. It was the 10p rate that was phased out, and which this article covers. - SimonP (talk) 20:27, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've just come across this after many years. I don't remember moving it the first time round but I'm disappointed it was reversed years later for reasons that don't make any sense to me. To be clear, yes the title was correct. Yes the Starting Rate was phased out. It doesn't exist any more. That was what the 10p rate was called. The lowest rate of UK income tax is now called the Basic Rate. This was clearly explained above --Lo2u (TC) 14:27, 8 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Abolition edit

I don't understand. There was something on the news that the 10p tax rate isn't abolished anymore. Please clarify. 86.29.141.132 (talk) 17:58, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

As I understand it the Prime Minister promised to make unspecified efforts to help people at some time in the future if they have been adversely affected by the tax increase. The majority of people in this country have tax deducted by their employers through the pay as you earn scheme and these people are already paying tax at the new rates. Others self-assess and they won't be expected to calculate their tax until next 6 April at the earliest so might not notice the changes until then. --Lo2u (TC) 19:51, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay, do you think a mention of this should be included in this article? 86.29.141.77 (talk) 19:59, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely, I think that's a very good idea. --Lo2u (TC) 20:06, 25 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well referenced and well structured. A fairly new article with the potential to grow, because of its current importance in british politics. Lacks an infobox and could do with some more information including quotes from some labour MPs' dispute over its abolition. 86.29.138.220 (talk) 14:10, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Procedural close. The current title in this request is now a redirect, and redirects cannot be current titles in move requests. (nac by page mover) P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 09:11, 9 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Starting rate of UK income taxStarting rate of UK income tax – This was the (correct) name of the article before 2012. In 2012 the article was merged into "Personal allowance". It was then forked again with a new name, effectively bypassing any discussion. To be clear, before 2008 there were three tax bands in the UK: Starting rate (the subject of this article), basic rate, and higher rate. Terms like 10p tax rate and 10% tax band were often used, but there was never a single agreed synonym for "starting rate", which is the correct name. • Close for now and sort out the page history A look through the history of the article, the proposed redirect and the talk page shows a complete mess of moves, content forks, what looks like copy & paste moves and more. And the current article and talkpage aren't even linked properly. This is one big mess that needs untangling first. Timrollpickering (talk) 21:18, 8 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I noticed that just after I left this template and left a note on the Requested moves talk page. I seem to have made the initial move back in 2008 (I don't remember it, but I think the mess began years later). But someone with the right permissions needs to delete the Starting rate of UK income tax redirect page (I don't think there's any way of preserving the full history) and move 10p tax rate to that page to unify the two. 10p tax rateStarting rate of UK income tax – This request is to correct the situation outlined in the previous RM, as depicted by editor Lo2u. I have no opinion about whether or not this request should be granted, so this nomination should not be counted as a "support" for this page move. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 09:55, 9 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for fixing the messy redirect situation. Obviously, as the original proposer, I support this.
1. The name is ambiguous and unhelpful. There are other (current) 10% tax rates, such as for capital gains tax. This is specifically about the abolished 10% starting rate for income tax.
2. Before 2008 there were four tax bands: the 0% personal allowance, the 10% starting rate, the 20% basic rate and the 40% higher rate. The starting rate was abolished in 2008 so there were only three bands. This is the correct, official name and there was never a consistent variant like "10% tax rate" or "10p tax band". A Google search for 2008 "10p tax rate" "income tax"[1] yields only 7,000 results, against 17,000 for 2008 "starting rate" "income tax" [2] and 4,000 for 2008 "10p starting rate" "income tax"
3. Consistency with elsewhere: Personal allowance is not named "0% tax rate" or "tax free rate".
4. As noted above, the article suffered a copy and paste move from its original home which circumvented the correct process for a move to 10p tax rate. This shouldn't be allowed to stand. --Lo2u (TC) 13:16, 9 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
If you know the details of the copy-and-paste move, there is guidance at WP:HISTMERGE that might help. It will take an admin to make it right. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 16:34, 9 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
