Memo dated 17th october 1986

Ok this a couple of quotes from a memo that GR wrote (I think from a copyright perpective it's a big dodgy for me to type out the whole thing - it's entitled 'Noah's arc' it's from pg 15 of the tribute book -

there is one element which I always felt was lacking in our original series. although our ship was engaged in a 'five year mission', there were only crew members aboard. For the new series, we are postulating travel through space that could last for an even longer period of time. To expect people to leave everyone and everything they hold dear for such a long journey is, I think, unconscionable. why should the enterprise crew be denied the opportunity to live a full and rewarding life? therefore I propose that we have men, women and children on board throughout the whole series.

what we would have then is, ideed, "wagon train to the stars".

This new approach to to STAR TREK would give us much the same sort of dramatic continuity that current shows like 'hill street blues" and "L.A. Law" have.

Excelsior model used for generations

From page 218 of the tribute book

The Starship Excelsior model, designed by bill george and built by ILM for Star Trek III. to transform this ship into the the enterprise-b for generations, a flare was added to the lower hull, creating a section that could show thw damage caused by the nexus without actually cutting into the original model --Fredrick day 00:08, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
