Origin of name? edit

I'm curious where the name comes from. My initial reaction was that they were hoping that people might mix them up with the prestigious Stanford University through changing a letter. I'm still not ruling that out, but it turns out that the name Stamford University has historical significance in England, even if there's no current university by that name. --Chriswaterguy talk 04:34, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

The name has got nothing to do with the Stanford University, as assumed at first glance by a lot of people. The name derives from that of Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of the city-state of Singapore. Stamford International University was founded in partnership with Stamford College of Malaysia, which is named after Sir Stamford who is widely known in both Singapore & Malaysia. The biggest differentiator here is the word "International" in the middle of the name. Long and exhausting debates have taken place over the necessity of this word - but time and time again it has been left in place, just so to avoid such confusion. --MiCRoSCoPiC^eaRthLinG (talk) 15:20, 18 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
