- No, they are mounted on stone plinths. I interpret Pevsner's description as referring to the smooth, flowing lines with which they were carved, and the elegance they still have after more than six centuries (although they are a bit weathered, their details are still quite clear). Having said that, I'm no architectural historian, and Pevsner spent his life travelling around England looking at buildings and their contents; he didn't give praise lightly. Hope that helps a bit!
