1. The person's research has made significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources.

Prof. Marketos was Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of History of Medicine and Philosophy at the University of Athens. He retired as an Emeritus Professor. His name has been associated with the rebirth and study of the History of Medicine in Greece. He is the author of more than 300 scientific papers on topics such as History of Medicine, Public Health,Medical Ethics and Nephrology. His scientific research covered a diverse set of topics from nosography to social medicine.

2. The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level.

The European Gold Medal of Merit (Luxembourg 1994) (Médaille d'Or European Order of Merit" (Gold Medal for services to Europe) as well as other national (which are not mentioned in the text) and international awards.

3. The person's academic work has made a significant impact in the area of higher education, affecting a substantial number of academic institutions.

He was instrumental in the reintroduction and study of the History of Medicine in Greece during the second half of the 20th century. Furthermore, Prof. Marketos pioneered and achieved the founding of two Medical Schools in Greece (in the city of Ioannina and in the city of Alexandroupolis) as he firmly believed that every person has the right to the opportunity for an academic education.

4. The person has held a highest-level elected or appointed academic post at a major academic institution or major academic society.

Besides of being elected Professor and Chairman of the Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine (1980-1998) he was a member of the Polish Academy, Accademia Ligure di Scienze e Lettere, Bulgarian Academy of Science.

5. The person has made substantial impact outside academia in their academic capacity.

A medical doctor by profession, he went on to become a Professor at the Medical School of the University of Athens, an editor and journalist, a member of the Greek parliament and a prominent intellectual. Furthermore he authored the very comprehensive and extensively illustrated “History of Medicine” book in Greek used as a textbook in the Greek Universities. He also wrote three collections of essays entitled “Bio-medical Notes”, “Living Well” and “Doing Well”. Having a deep sense and understanding of a physician’s ethical mission, he authored two monographs on this topic: “Claude Bernard and our Era” and “René Laennec: The French Hippocrates”. During the last 20 years Prof. Marketos also published twelve biographies of the most prominent pioneers in Greek medicine of the 20th century including one on Dr. George Papanicolaou (Pap test).

6. The person has been the head or chief editor of a major well-established academic journal in their subject area. He was the chief editor of Materia Medica Grega, the then most prestigious scientific journal in Greece and President of the Greek Association of Medical Press. He also published a number of articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, the LANCET and other prestigious international academic journals.
