As the article relates, these springs were called "Manchaca" [sic] before "Colonel Jose Menchaca of the Army of the Texas Republic" lived there, which I think was in the 1860s, and probably before the Texas Revolution. This is an error of history made by the City of Austin.
They were called "Manchack" (not "[sic]") by the Native Americans, a word which meant, more or less, "place of water." There is a lake or swamp in Louisiana with the same name. The "a" was added to the end of the name by an error on the map that was made when the railroad was built through there. The City of Austin decided that it was named after Colonel Menchaca, concatenating the error. Natives of Austin still call it "Manchack."
