Honest question from a non-expert

Honest question from a non-expert. Is the use of sign language really considered speech? I fully realize that sign is a real language (or, actually, many real languages). Sign is certainly communication. But not all communication is speech, and not all languages are spoken (e.g. sign). Isn't the word speech related etymologically to speak, spoken, etc?

Just wondering... -Rholton 01:56, 5 Mar 2004 (UTC)

i really don't understand what was the problem with all the older versions of this article, till the 16 aug 2004 when George Brower change them completely. i think that they are much better then the newer versions, so i reverted edits by Nuno Tavares to the last version by Burschik.

Speech as expression

Can someone add a bit about speech being a form of expression? JDR 16:45, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Speech as a Form of Art

I agree that someone should add a bit about a speech being a way to express and deliver information. This is also the way to convey ideas and turn minds in the same direction. It is art and we know quite a number of masters in this field, starting with Socrates. If someone is able to give additional light to this point, that would be really great.--Contento 16:13, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Talking to yourself

--Song of Songs 06:22, 17 July 2006 (UTC)Shouldn't there be a section on talking to one's self?

"Speech" as an academic discipline

Does this need an article of its own, or at least a section? --Orange Mike 22:06, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
