Variations

edit

The reference to "The Irish singer Christy Moore recalls encountering the song in his youth and including it in his earliest repertoire. However, the version he encountered and used is quite different from the more widely known version made popular by artists such as The Dubliners." suggests that the song is relatively new, and the variations slight. However the song dates from at least the 16th century or earlier. It may also be English rather than Irish. Something of its earliest known history should be given.101.98.175.68 (talk) 09:53, 21 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Christy Moore's version is a rewrite of the Dubliners and other popular versions to avoid copyright violation. The Dubliners version is a composite of Campbell's poem with a stanza from Herbert Hughes' 1930 arrangement for piano and voice.
