Apparent discrepancies with book

Having read Brenan's book, "South from Granada" I knew that there was nothing about his forming relationships with local girls, and nothing about any Juliana or her daughter. I was suspicious that the director had simply invented these sensational events to make the movie more salacious.

But some creative digging shows that all of these things are apparently true. I considered adding a "Controversy" section to the article -- but I don't know that there has been any sort of outcry about this little known movie. At any rate let me record the facts here as I have learned them, with this information anyone should be able to Google up the rest of the story.

Brenan and his American wife Gamel are buried in the English cemetery in Andalucia.

English Cemetery, Andalucia, Costa del Sol, Spain: Gamel Woolsey, the wife of Gerald Brenan, who died on 18th January 1968 the victim of cancer, was buried at the English Cemetery. Both she and Brenan were very fond of Malaga and lived in nearby Churriana. Her husband had the first two verses of a song by Cimbelino inscribed on her gravestone: "No longer need you dread the heat of the sun or the furious rage of winter."

Gerald Brenan died in 1987 and left his body to medical science; some say to save the funeral expenses. Untouched for fifteen years because nobody wished to dissect such an eminent body, it was left floating in formaldehyde in Malaga University until 2001 when he was interred alongside his wife. His epitaph reads simply: "Escritor Inglés, Amigo de España."

At Brennan's funeral were his grandchild Stéphane Corre (from Paris), son of Miranda Helen y Corre (his illegitimate daughter born in Granada in 1931) now a French doctor. Stéphane Corre's wife was at his side and Edward Oakden from the Embassy in Madrid. Carmen Calvo, Culture Minister of the Junta de Andalucía, and Francisco de la Torre, the mayor of Malaga, were also present.

So his daughter was indeed named Helen. Her mother was Juliana Martin Pelegrina

5.- Visita a lo santos lugares de Brenan y Lorca

Del 20 al 25 de junio del actual estuve en Granada con mi mujer Julia Hidalgo, en un viaje en coche con mi Nissan Almera, visité Granada y también estuve en La Alpujarra, concretamente en Yegen, tomando fotos de la casa donde vivieran Gerald Brenan entre 1920 a 1934 y preguntado por Juliana Martín Pelegrina, la española con la que tuvo una hija Miranda Helen (1931). El año que viene se cumplen 20 años de la muerte de Brenan en Alhaurín el Grande (19 de enero de 1987). Todos los vecinos de Yegen saben donde está la casa de Brenan, muy cerca de la fuente de los tres años. Estuvimos en la plaza de la iglesia hablando con gente, la camarera de un bar, al preguntarle sobre la película de Fernando Colomo, coguión con Jonathan Gathorne-Hardy , me dijo que no se había rodado allí sino en otros pueblos como en Medina-Fondales y Pórtugos (Ver el libro Diario de rodaje Al sur de Granada ), porque este pueblo se había puesto demasiado moderno, y no estaba como cuando en tiempos de los años veinte. Si algo quieren saber de los vecinos de Yegen, lo mejor es leer Ciega de Granada , 1990, del ya citado periodista y escritor Antonio Ramos Espejo que estuvo aquí y realizó entrevistas a personas que conocieron y convivieron al hispanista autor de Al sur de Granada , que al ser traducida al español no agradó a algunas familias, Brenan se avergonzó de ello.
