Question edit

Why is the link to the word "Craftsman" a link to "arts and crafts"-— Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.147.107.244 (talk) 209.147.107.244 (UTC)

Why is the 'Demographics' section so short coming? I think the idea of some sort of gang information would be beneficial to the page to get a more full and well-rounded view on South Los Angeles. Adding that may seem like a negative addition but adding that information can just be one addition to 'Demographics'; there can also be more numbers added on certain peoples and statistics to show growth in a positive manner. Gangs Formed in South Los Angeles edit

MS-13 and 18th St were not formed in South L.A. MS-13 was formed in the Pico-Union area of Los Angeles while 18th St was formed in the Rampart Area. I will remove these gangs from these area on this page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.182.122.220 (talk) 06:46, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cites Considered to be Part of "South Central" edit

You can't source boundaries to a non-specific area. If you add Compton, you must add Bell, Carson, Gardena, Hawthorne, East LA, AND Long Beach! South LA has never been "officially" defined, but refers to the "Inner City" of Greater Los Angeles. 12.230.34.2 (talk) 17:39, 30 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pretty common knowledge that Long Beach (as well as the other cites) are considered part of "South Central Los Angeles". The South Central Farmers even have sites in Long Beach. If you remove "Long Beach" you must remove Inglewood, Lynwood, Compton, etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.60.148.165 (talk) 19:11, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Common knowledge is not the point - it should be sourced. The lead suggests South Los Angeles extends to San Pedro, and Long Beach is beyond that. The fact that farmers have sites in Long Beach does not mean it belongs to South LA. See discussion below - they say the South boundary is Compton Blvd. --Parkwells (talk) 20:38, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Long Beach is not listed as part of South LA/South Central in the Wikipedia article on overall LA, either.--Parkwells (talk) 20:49, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Renamed to South Central Los Angeles edit

Isn't a Wikipedia convention that articles be named under their most recognized/used name even if it may not be the proper name? Does that convention apply to cities/areas? This article states that the most common name, even among residents, is South Central Los Angeles. I would therefore suggest moving the page to South Central Los Angeles. -ÅfÇ++ 1 July 2005 07:00 (UTC)

I agree one-hundred percent and am going to be WP:BOLD and move it myself. Hall Monitor 1 July 2005 18:53 (UTC)
I disagree that South Central Los Angeles is the most recognized name. I've moved the page back, but it's messy. I'm going to integrate the other talk page into this one too. Theshibboleth 22:10, 6 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Even the article itself says "The name is not very widely used; most residents of Los Angeles (including residents of South Los Angeles) still use the old name, and prominent figures from South Los Angeles, such as Ice Cube, also continue to refer to the area as South Central Los Angeles." If that be the case Thesibbileth, then you are wrong and the article should be changed back. If that is not correct, then it needs to be taken out of the article. S.C.Crip 23 March 2006

First Topic edit

The San Diego Freeway seems a little bit too far west for a boundary of South Central - the definition of "south of the 10 and east of the 405" would include a good chunk of the Westside.....

I agree. If you can sit down with a map and find better boundaries, go for it. You might also check the LA city websites and see if there is an official definition. -Willmcw 07:38, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)

For the northern edge of South Central, I'd put the Los Angeles/Culver City border as being the western boundary of the area. Farther south things are a little more vague.

I think Compton and maybe North Long Beach might be at the very southern edge, with Gardena in the west (but not Hawthorne!). Anything else is definitely 'not' South Central! InFairness 09:39, 8 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rename? edit

I seem to remember South Central being renamed "South Los Angeles" in an attempt to eschew the connotations of the riots. BenFrantzDale 09:25, Feb 6, 2005 (UTC)

It happened in 2003, 11 years after the riots. The new term is used by the Los Angeles Times but most Angelenos still use the old name. The whole idea of renaming an area to avoid bad connotations originated in the San Fernando Valley ; it has not worked there either.

I'm going ahead with the reanme. Whether or not the renaming worked is not the point. The area is officially known as South Los Angeles. Further the article itself seems to favor South Los Angeles over South Central Los Angeles. To be fair, Google finds more results for "south central los angeles" than for "south los angeles". I suspect however that with time this will change. Theshibboleth 22:01, 6 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
The article still says, that "South Los Angeles" is not very widely used. I don't really understand why we have moved the article away from its common name. A lot of the article's history remains at South_Central_Los_Angeles&action=history, by the way.—Nat Krause(Talk!) 22:55, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

More on South Central boundaries edit

Excluding Culver City, Palms, and the harbor connector, pretty much everything within the boundaries of the City of Los Angeles that's east of the 405 and south of the 10 would definitely fall into the category of South Central. It's a huge area without a whole lot of distinct neighborhoods once you get south of Slauson. --Slightlyslack 22:52, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Which would essentially mean that the northwestern boundary of South Central would be Culver City's eastern border with Los Angeles (South Fairfax Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard). Areas such as Windsor Hills and Ladera Heights are often considered "Southwest Los Angeles", which groups them together with Westchester, which they resemble economically although not in terms of racial demographics (Westchester having a much larger white population).

As a long time Angeleno I can tell you that "South Central" is not that difficult to define. Let me try to help you out:

North: Santa Monica Freeway (10) West: Crenshaw Blvd. East: Alameda Street South: Compton Blvd.

Of course, these boundaries are sometimes slightly blurred, but they nonetheless define the area in question quite well.

Let's go ago ahead and add add the more specific boundaries, saying that the currently cited boundaries are more general. I'll try to create a map, though I can't make any promises.
Theshibboleth 04:21, 17 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
I'm going to create a map with following boundaries based on the boundaries, though I feel they may be a little too specific:
West: the 110
East: the 710
North: the 105
South: the 91
If anyone can think of better boundaries (I might try) I'll create a new map if you want. The 405 doesn't work very well as a Western boundary because large sections of it run East-West.
Do you mean those freeways to be the boundaries of South Central? If so, I must say that it is WAY off. The I-10--Crenshaw Blvd.--Alameda--Compton Blvd. boundaries are really much better.
Also: I am a native of Walnut Park, and I can honestly say that none of us would 'ever' have considered it part of South Central! InFairness 09:39, 8 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Here's a map of the general Los Angeles area tha might prove useful in working out the boundaries: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=33.893217,-118.215637&spn=0.465664,0.881927&hl=en. Also, List_of_districts_and_neighborhoods_of_Los_Angeles list the neighborhoods considered to be in South Los Angeles (according to Wikipedia anyway).

I uploaded the map (File:Map of South Los Angeles.png). Theshibboleth 05:53, 17 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
That image has been deleted (was not used in the article). I just added a citation to a google maps page in the article lead, but it would also be worthwhile to have a view of the map on the page directly. This could be done via a screenshot (here's Google's map usage guidelines, fyi), but an embedded map would be best, if this is possible. Here's the HTML for the embedded map link. Not sure how to get it to appear correctly in the article: SteveChervitzTrutane (talk) 08:04, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Downey in SLA/SCLA? edit

Given that Downey is east of the Los Angeles River, was isolated from "old" South Central by fiercely segregationist South Gate, and has never had a substantial black population, I really don't think it should be considered part of the greater South Central region. If anything, it almost fits into the category of East Los Angeles, given its large Latino population. --Slightlyslack 11:29, 25 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Downey and South Gate would be part of southeastern Los Angeles county, and would qualify as part of the East Los Angeles region more than the South Central region. Hawthorne is usually considered as part of the South Bay region, not South Central, although its poverty and racial mix certainly set it apart from the Beach Cities. However, neighboring Lawndale has similar socioeconomic demographics, as well as the northern parts of Torrance, and I have never heard those cities referred to as being part of South Central.

Notable people . . . edit

Needs a definition as to just how these people are to be listed—and sources, either in this article or on the target pages. Some of the people listed have neither. Does anybody object to going through the list and deleting the people who are not connected with South Central on their own article pages? I think it would be a great chore and too much work to little effect to try to source all the names right in this article. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 18:35, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Gangs . . . edit

I've sent away for Dunn's book on "The Gangs of Los Angeles" and will be able to edit more knowledgeably here once I've read it! Thanks for your edits! Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 17:43, 4 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I never did receive that book. GeorgeLouis (talk) 06:14, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sources . . . edit

This article is too important not to have its sources listed. There seems to be a lot of "conventional wisdom" here.GeorgeLouis (talk) 23:18, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Here's an invitation to everybody who has added material to this article during the past several years: Please find sources for everything you or anybody else has added because this article can't go on without them. Let's say everything will be sourced within a month — by May 29, 2013 — or what's left will be challenged and removed? There has been a hatnote asking for more citations since June 2007. compton and notable residents edit

I see that these issues have been discussed above but maybe not together. Why is *anyone* from Compton listed in the notable residents list? The lead makes it clear that the article is about an area of Los Angeles. Did the LA city council change the name of Compton to South LA from South Central? This is apart from the suitability of other entries.— alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 16:51, 15 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Nomenclature edit

Some of the area is still called "South Central" by many. You can do a search in www.newspapers.com, limited to just the past few years, and you will see it used. Sincerely, BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 21:26, 3 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Some of it is not known as South Central at all and never has been. Only the geographic area on both sides of Central Avenue should have that appellation. So I am removing the term entirely from the lead. Thank you, and I hope you agree that USC and West Adams, for example, have never been part of "South Central." Yours, BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 21:36, 3 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Renaming of South-Central to South Los Angeles edit

I understand the confusion in the preceding section regarding the use of the term “South-Central”. I have cleared this up by adding citations that define where “South Los Angeles” is and what section of the city was renamed.

For the city maps that show “South Los Angeles”, I have cited a current version in the Wikipedia article that identifies the area "South Los Angeles". Here is an older version of the same map that identifies the region as “South Central Los Angeles. [1] You can see that the area in each map is the same with the exception of the name change.

As the New York Times noted, South Los Angeles is “defined on city maps as a 16-square-mile rectangle with two prongs at the south end.” (Technically, according to city documents, it is 15.5 square-miles.) The New York Times also says that this area was formerly known as “South-Central” and in 2003 the Los Angeles City Council renamed it “South Los Angeles".

The above section of this Talk Page notes above that phrase “South Central” only refers to the area around Central Avenue. As of now, that is correct, thanks to the renaming of the area. What had happened was, according to the Los Angeles Times, “that [the name South Central] originally applied to the black community that flourished along South Central Avenue from the 1920s to 1940s. As African Americans moved west, the name South-Central followed them”. [2] That is how the area west of the Harbor Freeway became known as "South-Central". And that is why the intersection of Florence & Normandie, miles west of Central Avenue, was referred to as "South-Central" during the L.A. riots.

So now, thanks to the renaming of the area west of the Harbor Freeway as “South Los Angeles”, the moniker “South-Central” can stay where it belongs…along Central Avenue.Phatblackmama (talk) 19:57, 5 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
