First principal

edit
  • Two questions have been raised:

1.) Whether the first principal at South Grand Prairie High School was Eugene Head or Bryce London? and 2.) Did the first principal chose the mascot in homage to his alma mater, Bonham High School (home of the Purple Warriors)? The following text has been removed from the article, pending substantiation: "The school's mascot, the Warrior, has been a part of the school since its opening. South Grand Prairie's first principal, Eugene Head, chose the mascot in homage to his alma mater, Bonham High School (home of the Purple Warriors)." Bejnar 20:49, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

In answer to Question #2: I am an early graduate of SGP. The story goes that the mascot was chosen by the first students who came over to South as seniors (and became the first graduates of the new school in 1970). They had been Grand Prairie High School juniors. One of these students, John Fry, was the first to wear the Warrior Mascot costume. As I recall, the story was that he came up with the idea for the colors and the mascot based on http://www.usctrojans.com/ USC's mascot and colors, etc. Since this was a California school, he may have had a family member related to this choice. Or he just liked USC. Or maybe it had something to do with creating a mascot that had more perceived power than the Grand Prairie High School mascot,"the Gopher."

The creation of this new high school in the southern sector of the city was extremely threatening to the north side of town. The creation of a strong symbol probably played a part in this competitive spirit.

I know that the students who eventually became the first graduates to go through all grades (Class of '72) always wondered about the way they became the SGP Warriors. It's all fascinating, since the southern sector of Grand Prairie is now thriving. This symbol of strength was ominous for the future of the city of Grand Prairie.
