No Best Feature Film nominated (2008) edit

None of the three films (Big Fellas and Confessions of a Gambler round out the nominations) have been nominated in the Best Film category, which isn't the only category that's empty. [1]

Back in 2008, when the Saftas were in their third year, only three film companies put forward their work for nomination. That year one particular film – The World Unseen – which had not even played in South Africa at the time, cleaned up and, oh boy, did people complain. [2]

John Kani's acceptance speech (2010) edit

While the sentiment is admirable it failed to strike a chord until John Kani, who won a Lifetime Achievement Award, translated it into real terms for everybody [3]

No live broadcast (2011) edit

7de Laan excluded from public vote (2012) edit

South Africa's most popular TV soap as voted by viewers the last three years in a row – has unceremoniously been dumped by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and its upcoming South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas). [5]

Arguably the popular soap's biggest star, Vinette Ebrahim who plays the beloved Charmaine, told Channel24 that all that really matters is the love of the viewers and fans. [6]

e.tv withdraws its shows (2012) edit

Etv has withdrawn all its nominated shows and presenters from the South African Film and Television Awards [7]

In a statement Monde Twala, group head of e.tv channels said [8]

“The withdrawal by e.tv, comes as a shock and surprise as the Saftas committee is not aware of any dissatisfaction regarding e.tv’s participation at the Saftas." [9]

critising e.tv's participation as having been "considerably low" anyway. [10]

No Best Actress in Feature Film (2012) edit

I recall how discouraged I was in 2012 when there was no SA Film and Television Awards (Saftas) category for best lead actress in a feature.[11]

Samuel L. Jackson makes appearance (2013) edit

Film royalty Samuel L Jackson sprang a surprise on revellers at the two-day South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) on Saturday. [12]

Host announces wrong winner (2013) edit

And then, although the introduction to the award for best writing in a TV drama series had just been screened, the winner of the best supporting actress in a TV drama was announced instead, with Rabinowitz reading the name of Nazli George from 90 Plein Street. Meanwhile, a voiceover announced that the writing award had gone to e.tv's 4Play: Sex Tips for Girls. [13]

When he realised the mistake, Rabinowitz looked offstage as if helplessly looking for support after announcing a winner for another category entirely. [14]

Sound problems during live broadcast (2014) edit

The awards have been criticised for having too many categories and often fail to get enough nominations for some categories. In 2008, SAFTA representatives were forced to announce three extensions to the entry deadline for the Best Newcomer and Lifetime Achievement Award categories, after they failed to get enough nominations. No Best Feature Film was announced in the 2009 ceremony.

Muvhango boycotts the awards (2016) edit

Leading SABC2 drama Muvhango is boycotting this year's 10th edition [17]

The reason for its absence is that the show didn't enter the awards. [18]
