Presumably the corn was being impored _into_ Athens during the Pelopenesian War. At times from Euboea and then also from areas bordering the Black Sea. But, I'll let someone more expert than I do the correcting, or expand the article.

Too many irrelevant photos and too much irrelevant text edit

An example of article bloat. There are photos that have nothing to do with Sounion or are redundant. (We don't need a picture of the same place at sunset, even if it's popular with the tourists.) Likewise, the article doesn't need details of legends which have nothing to do with Sounion nor of Byron's exploits elsewhere. Also, "Fig." numbered photos, with "See Fig so-and-so" in the text, are unnecessary when the "figures" are right beside the text. J M Rice (talk) 06:13, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I reject much of your critique. (A) Pictures:
  1. The picture of the Temple of Hephaestus is relevant because it is a much more intact exemplar of the same temple type and style as Sounion, built in the same period and probably by the same architect. It is therefore useful in giving the reader an idea of what the Sounion temple actually looked like, which is not evident from the standing remains
  2. The bronze statue of Poseidon is relevant because the Sounion temple was dedicated to that god and the shipwreck statue may well have been modelled on that cult statue (it was contemporary)
  3. The picture of Byron in local garb dates from the period when he was in Greece and wrote his engraving
  4. I can see no reason at all why readers should be deprived of the view of the Sounion sunset simply because you (arbitrarily) decide it's unnecessary. The sunset is mentioned in the text as a key attraction of the site and the picture is therefore relevant. (By the way, many of the readers of this article will be prospective tourists).

As regards the text, I see no problem with providing some context to statements in the text. I therefore propose to revert your pointless and damaging intervention in its entirety. PS: However, I accept that you are right about the figure numbers and will remove those from figures and text EraNavigator (talk) 19:47, 5 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
