This passage's phrasing is confusing, to the point where I can't clean it up because I'm not confident I understand the original author's intent.
David Attenborough, in his book, Life on Air (page 236), describes the timber from which a small wooden male sculpture in his possession having been identified by Kew Gardens as Sophora toromiro.
Also, the figure in question, and some of the microscopic characteristics of the wood, are also touched on in a History Channel special about Attenborough's quest to pin down its history called The Lost Gods of Easter Island.
