Talk:Sony Computer Entertainment/Archive 1

This article is out of date - can someone update it please?

I noticed that this article talks about possible future features of the PS3 (Linux included?), and the future release of the PSP, at some length. Both the PSP and the PS3 have been released for quite some time. Could someone do some updates, please.

Is anyone qualified to write about games produced by SCE?

I played the majority them. I consider very important the work in the franchises: SOCOM, Jak talk:TBC|☆]]TBC 19:34, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Amusing description

Am I the only one that finds this block of text rather amusing? "...the PSP uses a proprietary disc medium called the Universal Media Disc or UMD." If it's proprietary, it's not very Universal now, is it? --Mylon 06:39, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Linux on PSP

The article says “It's also known that the PSP system runs a custom Linux embedded system.” but I don't see any evidence presented for this. My impression, as a programmer who has dabbled with the PSP is that the statement is simply untrue. If it's true, find some evidence, add a more detailed cite to the main PSP article and leave this as-is. Otherwise, remove this line altogether from the SCE article. --82.68.41.196 19:24, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Linux on PS1 and PS3
Someone should add information on linux for the PS3 (there's Yellow Dog Linux, and patches have been released to allow any PPC linux to run on the PS3. Also, information on Runix would be helpful.

PS2

Brazil4Linux, I think GoldDragon's edits in this article are well written and clearer than your version. The information regarding the physical orientation of the console isn't quite an important feature. It is nice, but not really all that special. Additionally, the sentence about the PS2 beating out the XBox and GameCube in sales isn't really necessary on the SCE page. This information would be more relevant on the PS2 page within wikipedia, but on the SCE page a short overview of the system is all that is needed. However, the second paragraph that GoldDragon edited could be better worded... Perhaps "The PSX did not sell as well as the PS2 in Japan and as a result was not released in any other market." Your last sentence could be improved as well. Maybe "The PSX has (had? is the PSX still for sale?) extensive connectivity with the PSP as well." I'm not sure your revert is a better passage. What do you think? Paul 16:07, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Paul, you are correct in that this is blatant POV in support of Sony and the PlayStation. If you also take a look at the Ken Kutaragi (the Sony computer head) article and its earlier revisions (especially the August revisions), notice that ALL negative information had been removed even though they were property referenced with reliable sources. --GoldDragon 12:48, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, the problem of GolDragon that he is engaged in inserting non-reliable Sony Computer Entertainment losses to turn article POV and making revert wars with me. --Brazil4Linux 19:46, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
The additions I added back are citable a hundred times over. Please explain why you blanket reverted my copyedit and additions. A lot of information you added back in that revert were inccorect, this includes spelling and grammatical errors. K1Bond007 20:01, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't think that this article is to detail the console flaws. --200.147.82.129 20:05, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Note: this message was writen by me. --Brazil4Linux 20:50, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Maybe not "detail", but it is meant to be an overview of the systems. That includes flaws, positives, and everything in between. Merely an overview. To remove that is only positive POV. Here's Phil Harrison (the head of development for Sony in Europe) stating that it's true the PS2 was hard to develop for: [1]. Show me a better source to the contrary. K1Bond007 20:08, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm not contest the fact that PS2 is hard to develop for or fragile. I know this and that's true. I'm contest that this is a right place to put this. This is SCE article, not PS2 article. --Brazil4Linux 20:41, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, like I said, we don't need to go into detail - just an overview - the history of Sony's systems. I think it's worth noting that of the four systems (for that gen) the PS2 was hard to develop for and that there were many critcisms of it when it was released. It adds to the impact of the next line where it states - regardless it sold a ton and was #1 during that generation of games. K1Bond007 22:05, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Looks like User:GoldDragon just start reverting your PSX edit: "In contrast to the regular PS2, the PSX was not as popular in Japan and as a result it was never released North America or Europe [1]." ... and blanking my edit: "It's considered a luxury device. Many of their functions will be inherited by PlayStation 3 as the PSP integration, multimedia functions and their HD use". --Brazil4Linux 01:17, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
(Can we stop indenting our comments? It's getting annoying, having to type all those semi-colons...)
Anyway, what I wanted to say was that console debate is going to happen. Personally, I'm an Xbox supporter, but when (for Business Education) we had to write a report on all three gaming consoles, I discovered a very useful trick that keeps it fair. If you have 150 negative points on the PS3, then it is best to have (if possible) 150 negative points on the Xbox and Gamecube too. And vice versa for positive points.
What I thought, to also prevent pro-console pages, at the top of every heading, there is a comment:
All points regarding the pros and cons of each console should be discussed in the talk page first, to prevent boased reports. Failure to do this can result in a insert punishment here . You have been warned...
Both of those ought to do it, I reckon. Scalene 08:31, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Franchises

I've removed Arc the Lad, Lemmings, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, and Wild Arms from the franchise section, which (though they have appeared on the PlayStation console and have been published by SCE), are not actually owned by Sony Computer Entertainment. However, please correct me if I'm wrong. --TBC 19:32, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Game Studios

I know that All of SCE was merged into SCE Worldwide Studios, but shouldn't we include this on the SCE page or create it on the SCE Worldwide Studios page if it actually exists. Loompyloompy313 23:46, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't know about anyone else, but Kojima Productions are definitely not an SCEI 1st or 2nd party.Mr. Pointy 11:58, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Insomniac is NOT owned by Sony. According to its website it is privately owned and wholly independent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.2.209.2 (talk) 21:26, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

SCEA localization policies

Should SCEA's game localization policies be included in this article? Sony Computer Entertainment of America has a localization policy against localizing games containing sprite based characters, such as Tales of Rebirth, and against ports of old games without extras. Decimus Tedius Regio Zanarukando 20:44, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

- I think thats a good idea if we create an entry for SCEA and SCEE, so that readers aren't confusing the campaigns of those two companies to SCEI's (Japan) policies. 64.178.102.77 16:02, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

The Advertisement Section seems to contain only criticism and no "successful" campaigns. I think that the contents of the current Advertisement section should be re-written in some way to fit into a Criticism section. Aaronsingh 16:12, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Greek Party information?

To quote the article: "In April 2007, to promote God of War II, Sony held a 'Greek Orgy' in Athens Greece. They bought a goat from a local butcher, killed it, and left it's intenstines hanging out. When the picture was released by Sony's magazine, it outraged Animal's Right's groups. Sony immediately tried to pull the magazine, promptly pulling 81,000 copies off the shelves."

There have been many conflicting reports about the above; I am unsure as what tag to use for this, but that is basically unsubstantiated evidence that was initially reported by a *tabloid*. I think it should be removed entirely unless someone can provide a link to a news article that clearly states the facts.

PlayStation 3 description.

"In the [7th generation] Sony released the [Playstation 3]. It has the least sales because it's the most expensive console and [Xbox 360] made a year's head-start." Um... I hope I'm not the only one who sees something wrong with this.

Meh, it's true but not very neutral sounding. Meanwhile, I changed "The next console released in the PlayStation series, as well as Sony's entry in the seventh-generation console war..." to say 'era' instead of 'war'. It's a freaking console. The conflict in Iraq is a war. Three consoles that are released and maybe competing for sales is NOT a war.

Fair use rationale for Image:Sonypsx.jpg

Image:Sonypsx.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Sony Computer Entertainment dissolved.

This does not mean they are "getting out of the industry." Sony is merging it with its Vaio and Walkman divisions.[2] - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 23:52, 27 February 2009 (UTC)
