Chequeboard design

There is a feature that runs through the Sonic games and has occurred in some other Sega games eg Super Monkey Ball and Sega Superstars Tennis- a chequeboard design in 2 different colours. This may sound of limited interest but it is a highly relevant feature of some Sega games as far as I am concerned as the design greatly helps to accentuate the sense of speed integral to those games. I have always considered it as somewhat a hallmark of Sega's identity ever since Sonic the hedgehog.

8 bit version

i belive we should make a seperate article for the 8 bit version as they are both different games. the origional 8 bit version is built into my master system and green hill zone has no loops, many of the leels are different and there is a sky zone that takes place before the final robotnik battle. whenever i type in sonic the hedgehog 8 bit or master system it redirects here —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.141.171.173 (talk) 13:25, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Why does the 8 bit version of Sonic 2 get a seperate article but not this one? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.253.64.213 (talk) 22:42, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

"The Sega Master System version was the final title for the console released in the U.S."

Not true. Sonic 2 was also available on the Master System. I believe it was released in 1992, probably not long after the Genesis/megadrive version was released. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.141.245.30 (talk) 23:03, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I just read this statement on the page and was about to make this same comment. I just picked up a SMS at a garage sale last Saturday. Included was a bunch of games. Among those games was Sonic the Hedgehog 2. That's what prompted me to even visit this site. When I read that, I was like "hold on a minute!" Luckily, someone else beat me to it. 12.24.60.12 (talk) 23:37, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Robotnik vs. Eggman

Please people can we sort this once and for all? Stop editing Sonic articles and writing Eggman in place of Robotnik. Robotnik is the name by which Eggman was introduced to American and European audiences so that's the name we use on this Wikipedia. Eggman is exclusive to Japan, at least up until Sonic Adventure was released. --Steerpike 19:04, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

But in Sonic Adventure 2 and newer, he is referred to as Eggman almost as often as Tails is called Tails. 68.190.167.252 23:03, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Yes but at the time of the realease of "Sonic the Hedgehog", he was referred to as Robotnik. Therefore, I believe that the article should refer to Robotnik and Robotnik alone, or maybe make only a passing reference to the fact that he was Eggman in Japan and it later became his "nickname" in the US. 168.11.48.175 11:52, 6 April 2006 (UTC) Hobblededee, hobbledehoy

I also agree that references to "Eggman" should be removed as Robotnik was the only name ever used in the English version (and this is the English Wiki). The use of "Eggman" in English versions first appeared in Sonic Adventures (not in Sonic 2) also I seem to remember the Eggman in Sonic Adventures NOT being the Dr. Robotnik from the first game but a different person all together.

... They are one and the same (You must be thinking of Gerald Robotnik). It's irrevelent that it's the English version. The name is almost retconned now besides the fact that it's his surname. Besides, it was shown only in the manuals. The games themselves showed "Eggman", starting from Sonic 2 Genesis.

I think it should be Robotnik, becuase that is what he was called in the tv shows, and I believe that is what he was called in the video games. He is called Eggman in the newer dreamcast and later games, but in the genesis era, he was refered to robotnik. Oneupthextraman 01:10, 20 October 2006 (UTC) They are both the same namesake

In the manual for Sega Genesis Collection he is referred to as Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.253.64.213 (talk) 23:25, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Sonic "The" Hedgehog

All occurences of "Sonic the Hedgehog" replaced with "Sonic The Hedgehog". Apperantly the "T" in Sonic The Hedgehog is capitalized. It was even registred as Sonic's Middlename by Al Nilsen, Sega's Marketing Guy.
Source: Kent, Steven L.: The Ultimate History of Video Games. From Ponk to Pokémon and Beyond - The Story Behind the Craze That Touched Our Lives and Changed the World. Prima Publishing, Roseville (2001), p. 428.

I don't think "The" should be capitalized. I mean, really, who capitalizes "The" if it's not the start of a sentence/phrase? I certainly don't. --Shadow Hog 15:56, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Did you read my reasoning? It's not a "the" in the sense of a definite article but rather in the sense of Sonic's middlename, as it was apparently meant to be by Sega, since, as I wrote, they registred it as his middle name specifically with the The capitalized, and could only register it becauase that is not common and therefore differentiates it from a "the" as a definite article. I mean, really, who does not capitalize middlenames? I certainly do. ;)
Al Nilsen isn't the definitive source on this, though. Sega themselves are, and they never use it as a middle name. I understand you know what you're talking about, but hardly anyone I know would probably agree that "The" is a valid middle name; that's utterly silly. I think it should be moved back and left as it was. --Shadow Hog 19:16, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
But Sega themselves are still writing the "The" capitalized, e.g. here: http://www.sega.com/games/game_temp.php?game=sonicmegaplus&id=hp_pldwnlst - and I guess Al Nilsen was the definitive source at the time the decision was made because he was speaking for Sega. Why should the Wikipedia entries not follow what has been established by Sega (or someone representing them) and more important is still being used like it today. Even if it is not communicated as Sonic's Middlename (anymore) it apparently is (as it was registered as such and the "The" is still capitalized in Sega's publications). Probably the fact itself should be included in the Wikipedia article.
Regardless of whether the character is called Sonic The Hedgehog or not (he's not), the "the" in the game's title shouldn't be capitalised - it's just convention for titles (see Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones for just one example) and it simply looks wrong compared to the way magazines, comics and books have been doing it for years. On the other hand, there are some idiosyncratic exceptions, so maybe Sega's official statements take priority, no matter how bizarre they seem. :( --Nick R 16:59, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
The only problem with that idea is that the title of the game is supposed to be the same as Sonic's full name. Seeing that his middle name is "The", it should be capitalized.

I'd just like to point out this Master System cartridge which capitalises "The". It should be capitalised, simply because it's correct. - LeonWhite 07:06, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

File:Sonic1ms-cart-eu.jpg

The characters name is officially Sonic The Hedgehog, so it irritates me that all these articles incorrectly spelled it with a small "t". That's like saying the Jerry Lee Lewis article should be spelled "Jerry lee Lewis". TJ Spyke 00:15, 24 June 2006 (UTC) of course ANY TRADEMARK oughta be capitalized

Not quite sure why it was reverted back, but "TJ Spyke" is 100% correct that the title of this game series is Sonic The Hedgehog with a capital T. Sega's official website lists it as such. The trademark lists it as such. "Sonic The Hedgehog" is a name, with "The" being the middle name. Further changes to this will result in it being reverted back to "Sonic The Hedgehog" as changing it is vandalism, and the former is INCORRECT, PERIOD. No matter what amount of arguing you believe, it's WRONG. Take a look at one of the pages on Sega's official website and you'll see in every occurrence, the "T" capitalized. http://www.sega.com/games/game_temp.php?game=sonicnext&lid=gp_sonicnext&lpos=allgamelist_title
You'll see that other games like "Feel the Magic" do not have the "T" capitalized because "the" is used according to the fact that it's a title, and is grammatically incorrect. http://www.sega.com/games/game_temp.php?game=feelthemagic&lid=gp_feelthemagic&lpos=allgamelist_title
If Wikipedia is to be an accurate source of information, the T MUST remain capitalized as it's the correct way to spell out "Sonic The Hedgehog." This article's title needs to be changed accordingly. IceSage 11:45, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I really do not think it matters, can't it go either way?Sonicfan122 02:09, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Move

Somebody moved this article to Sonic The Hedgehog (Genesis), despite the above discussion, so I have moved it back again. The 'T' should not be capitalised for the sole reason that most people do not think that it should be. -- Supermorff 20:37, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

It doesn't matter what "most" people think it should be. Officially it is "Sonic The Hedgehog" with a capital T. People who think otherwise are wrong. TJ Spyke 00:17, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Blast processing

I'm removing the bit about "blast processing" - I believe the term was used to promote Sonic the Hedgehog 2, not the first Sonic game. [1] --Jtalledo (talk) 16:53, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

Anyone think this page is ready for a peer review/featured article?

I think this article is really good. If I weren't so lazy I'd probably nominate it for fa or at least to a peer review, I really think it's ready.

Would the graphics in this game be considered Art Deco? --Richy 23:23, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Interesting, once I did play Speedy Gonzales (SNES) and that game is just pointless to me.

Some clean up warranted

The level section needs to be trimmed drastically. Nobody is interested in reading about what happens in which act of level X. This has gone well past encyclopedic value. The "Secrets" section confuses me. Is it a section about secrets or about the Beta version? If so, re-arrange the beta version under "Versions" and remove "Secrets" altogether. --Steerpike 19:54, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Sonic the Hedgehog GBA

I've searched for a page on the newly-announced GBA game. Should we create one? It's basically just the Sonic Jam version as far as we know.

I don't think we should create a page until it's clear what the game is. Chances are it's not really a new game and the info should just go on this page. Ace of Sevens 18:09, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Most famous cheat?

I have a hard time believing that the level-select code in this game is the most famous cheat in video game history; I believe that honor goes to the Konami Code, which inspired a t-shirt and has its own wikipedia article. Anyone disagree before I change it? -Unknownwarrior33 02:10, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

If it's not the Konami code, it's one of the Doom codes. Definitely not anything from Sonic. Ace of Sevens 16:45, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Dr. Robotnik

Why is Dr. Robotnik sometimes called "Eggman"?

Dr. Eggman was Ivo Robotnik's Japanese name (which, actually, came out later). In some games, either name would occasionally subtly slip out (such as Sonic 2 Genesis' Wing Fortress Zone with "EGGMAN" written, Sonic Triple Trouble with "Robotnik Winter Zone", the Sonic Drift games with "Eggman" in each, and Sonic Jam using both names such as Robotnik in his profile and Eggman in his statue and most other places). Then, in Sonic the Fighters, a big thing happened: BOTH names were used in all versions! He is accidentally referred to as "Robotonic" in the intro, though, but the boss battle calls him Dr. Eggman. In the game's files, though, he is identified as "Dr. Eggman: Robotnik". Since the game is relatively obscure as an arcade game, it wasn't picked up until Sonic Adventure. In the Japanese version, he is still Dr. Eggman, and he wishes to build Eggmanland as the ultimate city. However, in the English / Other versions, he usually calls himself Dr. Robotnik, while almost everyone else except Gamma and some of the NPCs usually call him Eggman, and he wishes to build Robotnikland. Flash forward to Sonic Adventure 2. Eggman has found a diary from his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik. Shadow has memories of Professor Gerald's granddaughter, Maria Robotnik. To top it all off, the infamous laser blasting FMV about halfway throught the game shows the words "Robotnik Empire" behind Eggman. Yet, he calls himself Eggman, and calls it the Eggman Empire. He is hardly ever called Robotnik in this game, probably because there would have been confusion with three Robotnik characters running around. This is exactly how the Japanese version goes, too, with Robotnik being his surname once again. So Eggman is a nickname, since it is established that his full name is Ivo Robotnik (Ivo, by the way, means "egg" backwards). Alternatively, his name could also be Dr. Eggman Robotnik, though this is unlikely as Eggman is used in the nickname sense most of the time. And the rest is history. It's sort of reminiscent of the change from Princess Toadstool to Princess Peach in the Mario Bros. series.

Who keeps deleting the Cheats entry for this article?

Well? I'm trying to contribute to Wikipedia aswell and you're not eactly letting me by deleting my contribution.. :(—Preceding unsigned comment added by Iceferno (talkcontribs) 19:31, November 25, 2006

I think it's being deleted because it's not really encyclopedic, check out WP:NOT and it'll say "While Wikipedia has descriptions of people, places, and things, Wikipedia articles should not include instructions or advice (legal, medical, or otherwise), suggestions, or contain "how-to"s" and the cheats definitely fall under how-to's. Sonic3KMaster(talk) 20:06, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
What Sonic3KMaster said. The page is not supposed to be a walkthrough. The cheats mentioned in some of the other Sonic articles are only relevant because they're named in connection with the release date and nothing else. --Steerpike 00:19, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

I disagree it's not like anyone has been harmed by a cheat or tip on wikipedia.

I'm going to have to disagree that cheat codes definitely fall into the category of "how-to." While a section on codes shouldn't be written in a "how-to" format, this is a stylistic issue, rather than a question of the information's legitimacy as pertinent encyclopedic content.

Understanding what codes were available to gameplayers contributes to a fuller understanding of the game and its place in gaming history. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.122.253.30 (talk) 00:08, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Sounds playing on top of each other?

Just wondering what this means, if the sounds mentioned here is played simultaniously or become "broken" if too many sounds play at the same time (the latter confirmed by listening closely to the Green Hill Zone soundtrack while intentionally making a bunch of sounds play...) Hacks

I don't think that section belongs here. It's clearly advertisement. Is there any reason it shouldn't be deleted?--Iamstillhiro1112 09:23, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Some it needs to stay, but I've eaten a large chunk of it so that it doesn't apply so much to one specific hack (except KiS1, which is pretty important). -- RattleMan 19:15, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
That Knuckles one is really the only one I find worthy of staying. Because it's kinda doing something Sega had attempted but hadn't been able to do. It's like an unofficial, official patch for Sonic and Knuckles. The rest of the hacks mentioning adding various Sonic characters need to go. If it keeps up eventually someone is gonna list a hack that includes Shade, the fan made brother of sonic.--Iamstillhiro1112 01:12, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

ROM-hacks constitute fancruft, and should be deleted per spam / advertising. Stick with contributing information about the official game itself, and not third-party projects. 70.153.98.140 (talk) 22:43, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Knuckles The Echinda in Sonic the Hedgehog

Even though I realise that this is not a message board, does anyone know a link to get the hacked version of "Knuckles The Echinda in Sonic the Hedgehog". If anyone does, I suggest putting it in the external links section of this article.

It wouldn't be that clever because Sonic 1 is still copyrighted. You might want to search for "s1k.zip" at your favourite p2p source. --32X 20:57, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
I've found the link to it. It's at [2]. Unzip the file, and open it with a Mega Drive/Genesis emulator.

Credits section

Could someone fix the credits section? I would do it myself but the article is semi-protected and I registered a few minutes ago. I would suggest something like, for example, "Yuji Naka (credited as YU2)". There's another mistake, it's not "Reiko Kodama" but "Rieko Kodama", and Rieko does have an article on Wikipedia. Something like "Rieko Kodama (credited as Phoenix Rie)" would be perfect. Thanks. Segata128 19:01, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Separate Master System/Game Gear version article?

I noticed that Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit) has been redirected to this article by User:A Link to the Past, with the edit summary referring to a discussion. (Where was that discussion?) Yet Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit) remain separate articles.

I think that the 8- and 16-bit versions of the game are sufficiently different to deserve separate articles. Or if not, then more of the information from the old article should be merged into a dedicated section within this one. At the moment, there's just a single paragraph, lumped in between information on the game's regional variations and direct ports. The MS/GG version is much more different from the Mega Drive version than is implied by that placement.

So, a separate article, or a dedicated section within this one? And should the same be done for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)? --Nick RTalk 15:21, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Still no comments on this? True, the differences between the 8- and 16-bit versions of Sonic the Hedgehog aren't as great as the differences between the 8- and 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog 2, so maybe it doesn't deserve its own article, but I'm surprised no-one seems to have any opinion either way... especially when they care so strongly about certain other things related to the character. :-) --Nick RTalk 23:50, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
I didn't notice this before... Anyway, I've asked User:A Link to the Past to drop by with a link to the discussion. Miremare 00:42, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Link was referring to a discussion he had here with another editor who at first reverted the redirect, so there wasn't an "official" discussion on the subject. So I guess if you want to restart and expand the article, just be WP:BOLD and go ahead. Miremare 16:45, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

this is an important note to the game, and makes people aware of them since they will come on the wikipedia article, for the history and little hints, the areas enhance the game, I belive theat they should stay since they are just as important as the special stage. Holli the Hedgehog?

Along time ago, I can't remember where but I picked up the fact that Sonic the Hedgehog wasn't always called "Sonic" but before he turned blue his true name was "Holli", can someone clear this up for me if it's authentic or not?

15 Man Group???

Why is it that every site says something along the lines of "The 15 man group started away on the development. "

Separate article for releases + versions of Sonic 1

I think it would be best if we take a chunk of the info out from the Versions and releases section. The article is large to begin with and many people will usually refer Sonic the Hedgehog to the Genesis original, or Sonic 1. Maybe an article just for the other releases so each release has its' own infobox? Kind of like this except we use sections instead of subtitles. We could still keep the Versions and releases section, but we just put a See also: Sonic the Hedgehog Versions and releases or whatever the title of the article should be. --Hasek is the best (talk) 17:45, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

I think there's a case for splitting the information about the 8-bit version as it is essentially a distinct piece of software rather than a port. All the other versions are basically just ports and I think the information about them is better off in this article. EvilRedEye (talk) 10:20, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

However this article should just be about the game instead of having all the ports of the game. There isn't any need to have each port their own one, but at least make a page dedicated to all of it. It can stil be mentioned here though. --Hasek is the best (talk) 00:40, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

8-bit version

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(8-bit)#8-bit_version

The 8-bit version is NOT a port of the 16-bit version. It is a separate game. It needs to be split from this article. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:13, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Should this article be split or not?

OK, the situation with this article is a mess. Apparently, users think they can split and merge the article as they wish without a proper discussion of the matter beforehand. The article was split a month ago for the 16-bit and 8-bit versions with just a comment in the editing summary, and no previous discussion. Now, after some changes were made to accomodate this split, they have been merged back again without no debate, and arguing in the summary that nothing was made to improve the notability.

So the question is? Can we all agree about which is the best solution before someone decides to split the article again on his/her own? --Lashiec (talk) 13:57, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

The article needs to be split again and then left like that. The 16-bit and 8-bit versions are different games, so they belong in different articles. The only similarity is the title, and I don't see people merging this article with Sonic '06 even though it shares the title.

I agree, and I went ahead and split the articles. The articles were merged without discussion. They are not the same game, so they deserve separate articles. 98.221.85.188 (talk) 02:46, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
