A city(town with a municipality) that connects Bardhaman(Burdwan), Bishnupur, Durgapur and Bankura and soon to be connected with Panagarh surrounded by forest on one side and River Damodar on the other side is one of the verdant jewel of Bankura district. It is a blend of tradition and modernization and has improved vastly in terms of education, agriculture, roads and railways. The Bankura Damodar Railway has started its operation from Masagram(chord) to Bankura.(During day time it starts from Mathnashipur). The train is itself an object to behold, a biodiesel run engine with its front shaped like a beak of a bird. The forest is popularly known as Chunporar math or Chunpora jungle is the home of Jackals, Hyenas and Elephants. The jungle is rich in Sal trees famous for timber and leaves used to make plates. The most predominant river is the Shali river and its canal the Bonparul. And where these 2 rivers cut each other perpendicularly there is the aqueduct with a narrow footbridge for adventure seekers. Adjacent to the Chunpora forest there is the deserted Alqatra/Tar factory which looks eerie from inside and a well in it whose depth seems infinite until you throw a stone(advice: dont risk your lives by looking into the well).

If you are an adventure seeker you can roam in the forest at day time but be cautions of elephants, there are innumerable streams which can quench your thrust during exploration but keep your compass ready. You can take a dip into Shali river or any other brown coloured ponds, not the green or black ones. This place is made for adventure. Even Sonamukhi Railway station is surrounded by jungle.

Coming back to the city you will find the Sonamukhi municipality, Bindubasini Jubilee High School, Sonamukhi Super Market, the Chowrasta(junction of Bishnupur Road, Durgapur via Pakhanna Polashdanga road, Burdwan Road and Bankura road). Yes there is also a Sonamukhi college and Sonamukhi girls school along with BJ High School. An engineering college is also being built. Now come to the city streets, surprised to see concrete roads, yes thats what municipality is for. The residents do enjoy water supply two times a day and electricity with few cuts. Industry both small and medium is thriving here along with agriculture. Interested in heritage, sonamukhi wont disappoint you,as there are temples and havelis centuries old, the famous needle and many such things. Sonamukhi is emerging, there are ATMs, Recharge shops and yes, Cyber Cafes. Well, there is also a cimema hall.

Rise of Sonamukhi will be more prominent when the bridge across Damodar comes into existence, connecting Panagarh and Sonamukhi which are very near to each other and land rates will surely increase. Debo2007 (talk) 19:56, 22 April 2014 (UTC)Debojyoti BhattacharyaReply
