Change: From the findings on a population-based study, there is about 37% increase in the likelihood of major depression among adolescents. In a different study conducted in 2007, those who used the most multiple social media platforms (7 to 11) had more than three times the risk of depression and anxiety than people who used the fewest (0 to 2). --- To: A 2007 study found that those who used the most multiple social media platforms (7 to 11) had more than three times the risk of depression and anxiety than people who used the fewest (0 to 2). --- Reason: 37% percent statistic is irrelevant and not related to social media use, the study cited in the citation examined the "prevalence of major depressive episodes (MDEs) in adolescents" broadly and not related specifically to social media use. After the subtitle "Development of social-media platforms", add a new subtitle "Rise of Short-Form Video Platforms"

The content: The rapid rise of short video platforms in the ever-evolving social media space. The phenomenon represented by TikTok has undergone a significant paradigm shift. This transformative trend has redefined the way individuals engage with digital content, generating new forms of creativity, interaction and cultural expression.

In 2016, TikTok, by Chinese tech company ByteDance, allowed users to create and share short, engaging music videos, often incorporating choreography, humor, and a variety of creative elements, in the platform's unique format. Its algorithmic content discovery mechanism, which customizes content feeds based on individual user preferences, has helped with great appeal, promoting trends and challenges that go viral.

The brevity and visual impact of short videos cater to the short attention span of modern users, providing quick gratification and entertainment in small doses. In addition, these platforms democratize content creation, providing a level playing field for aspiring creators to showcase their talents and gain recognition without the need for elaborate production values.

Add some new contents under the subtitle "Platform convergence"

The content: On August 5, 2020, Instagram launched the "Reels" feature, which enables users to create and share 15-second videos and seamlessly integrate them into the existing Instagram ecosystem. On July 13, 2021, YouTube launched "Shorts," aimed at making lively videos with music, enhancing the video-sharing giant's appeal to younger groups. Whaoeee (talk) 05:30, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I request you to edit and consider snapchat as a proper social media instead considering it as “considered as social media by interpreting the meaning of social media” 223.184.25.188 (talk) 13:30, 15 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Outdated data on 'Most popular social networks' edit

I can update the most popular social networks list with latest data from Statista and remove the previous one, which is outdated. Is this fine? https://www.statista.com/statistics/272014/global-social-networks-ranked-by-number-of-users/

Grayfell blanket reverted numerous edits for a basic reason that only applied to a subset of the edits. He didn't do any due diligence in starting a discussion about it nor attempting to rectify the problems himself. Its very easy to destroy people's work, much harder to do it in the first place. Please respect the time other people put into their edits, @Grayfell. Let's fix the edits instead of just blanket reverting them. I'll help. Fresheneesz (talk) 18:43, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

The concern was WP:FORBESCON, which justifies the removal. If you'd like to restore anything that is clearly verified by reliable and independent sources, that would be a good start. --Hipal (talk) 18:50, 2 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Definition and Features edit

What is the purpose of social media? The article doesn't explicitly ask and answer this question. By focusing on the user's experience, however, the article implies that the purpose of social media is the sharing of user-supplied content. This is not inaccurate. But there's another purpose which the article downplays: social media was created and exists for the purpose of generating profit for social media companies. Shouldn't the article prominently include this as part of its definition of social media? Focusing not just on the user's experience but also on the fundamental purpose of the technology as a way of making money for the social media company could allow readers of the article to better understand the tension inherent in this technology. Thoughts?

D.Holt (talk) 12:48, 28 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@D.Holt I think that you have raised an excellent point. Social media are far more than interactive technologies. Yes, these technologies are used for creating, sharing and aggregating user generated content. Perhaps when social media started off, this was their purpose. But social media has other purposes. Social media is far more than sharing. Its new purposes are for profit or surveillance as suggested by Nick Srnicek in the book Platform Capitalism or Shoshana Zuboff in the book The Age of Surveillance Capitalism. At the very least this page should have a link to other relevant wikipedia pages such as the Platform economy Derek J Moore (talk) 10:07, 2 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

This article are making the short answer "six degree" as the first social media platform which is not true.:

Please read: History of KOM (su.se) which came 1976. Definitely a social media platform!

Social Media edit

Here's what I am proposing to do for the social media is a great way to learn about your community and the world around you section:

Such as their mental health. Based on a previous study, regarding the ages 12-15, social media can have negative consequences. This includes but isn’t limited to encountering depression and anxiety. Especially to those who consume more than three hours of it.

Here's what I am proposing to do for the social media has offered a new platform for peer pressure with both positive and negative communication section:

Despite this, social media can impact kids and young adults from having a proper in person conversation as they are more inclined to feel intimidated due to the lack of facial expressions and body language one can get from having a face-to-face conversation.

Here's what I am proposing to do for the criticisms of social media range from criticisms of the ease of use of specific platforms and their capabilities, disparity of information available, issues with trustworthiness and reliability of information presented,[261] the impact of social media use on an individual's concentration,[262] ownership of media content, and the meaning of interactions created by social media section:

Given this, outcomes from a previous study, note how social media’s exposure to tobacco and alcohol can influence adolescents into using them.
