21.st century artists

There should be an addition to the "Art" section about the recent Slovak visual artists. For example: Notable Slovak artists of the 21st century include Cyril Blažo (1970), Petra Štefanková, Martin Vargic and Viliam Loviska (1964) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.216.229.179 (talk) 15:51, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Dead link

The link via note 103 doesn't work ('Not found'). Since the source (the Eurostat report on the linguistic knowledge of EU citizens) most certainly does exist, I can only assume the link has been wrongly set up.213.127.210.95 (talk) 15:22, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

Country's name

Czechoslovakia split into two countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The proper name is the Slovak Republic according to the Government Office of the Slovak Republic website (http://www.vlada.gov.sk/government-office-of-the-slovak-republic/) Robert Fico is not the Prime Minister of Slovakia, he's the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic. (http://www.vlada.gov.sk/prime-minister-of-the-slovak-republic/)

How the country sees itself should be controlling. These websites indicate one thing but need more evidence and contribution from someone from the country and/or an expert on the country. If the evidence supports the website information, recommend title of this page be changed to "Slovak Republic" with Slovakia redirecting to the page.

Thanks RaqiwasSushi (talk) 07:06, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

It's OK, let's look e.g. to the article about France: "France, officially the French Republic". Czech Republic does not have such simple, frequently used name for a historical reasons.Ditinili (talk) 13:21, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

As a native speaker of English (which the person who made this comment almost certainly isn't) I can only say that correct English usage - rather than 'how the country sees itself' - 'should be controlling' (in quotes because of the strange use of English). In Holland, where I live, the country is called 'Nederland', and 'Holland' is only a part of it. But that has no influence whatever on what the country's called in other languages. In English, at least, 'the Netherlands' sounds faintly pompous, and the everyday name for the country is 'Holland'. The same surely applies to 'Slovakia', which is simply what English-speakers call it. Similarly, David Cameron is the Prime Minister of Britain (or 'the UK') - it would sound ridiculous to call him 'the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', and nobody does. 'The Czech Republic' is an almost insoluble exception, since the only obvious short name, 'Czechia', sounds comical in English - I don't know why, but it's a fact. The Czech government has tried to insist that 'Czechia' be used, but it simply isn't entitled to tell English-speakers how to use their own language - any more than the British government is entitled to tell Czechs or Slovaks how to use theirs. For that matter, Finland 'sees itself' as 'Suomi' or 'Suomen tasavalta' - but that doesn't stop almost everyone else from calling it 'Finland' or something like that.213.127.210.95 (talk) 15:39, 28 March 2016 (UTC)

Map is broken

The map in the section Slovakia#Administrative divisions has something badly wrong with it—I suspect the x and y coordinates are not between 0 and 1 as they should be. The article displays on my screen as a tiny, narrow strip at the top and left of a vast blank page. Also, the names of the divisions are not showing up, only the base map is shown. I don't know how to fix this myself; I hope someone watching this page can do it. — Gorthian (talk) 01:55, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

Wooden churches

In the Culture section there is stated that the precious wooden churches are mostly in the historical region of Spiš. That is not true - most of these churches are in the more eastern parts of today´s Prešov region (currently, Spiš is divided between Košice and Prešov regions, covering their western parts). 178.143.94.27 (talk) 23:01, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Of the four mentioned villages with wooden churches, none belongs to the historical region of Spiš. So I´m changing this. 178.143.94.27 (talk) 23:05, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

WWII war crimes in Slovakia

I noticed a false information which tried to depict a war criminal as a sort of war hero. The lie wasn't even elaborate, as it made up 40 000 non existent people and claimed that the war criminal had saved them to levy the 70 000 who had died under his leadership.

After Hungary had seized southern Slovakia, according to the records of Slovak state, there were 80 000 Jews left under the Slovak administration. Germany "offered" deportations of 20 000 Jews for a fee, to which Slovak government responded by offering all 80 000. The rest of Slovak Jews lived in the Southern Slovakia, which had fallen under Hungarian occupation and were therefor out of Slovak jurisdiction. Out of 80 000 Jews which Slovak state was aware of, about 70 000 were murdered, either locally or deported into Nazi death camps. Deportations were stopped after they started to seriously affect the war economy. All of this and a lot more can be found in the provided sources. The sources are a prosecution and investigation and the subsequent trial of another related war criminal (Anton Vašek), who was in charge of the actual deportations. He himself didn't object these numbers and although he used plenty of other claims for his defense, even this Nazi who was in charge of deportations and forced labor camps didn't dispute the above stated facts. The indictment is missing the name of the prosecutor because I couldn't decipher his signature, but the names of the judges are clearly readable. I included the name of the head of the board, but there were 6 other judges.

Here comes the lie which claims that Tiso supposedly saved up to 40 000 Jews, which is literally impossible as there were less than 10 000 Jews left under Slovak jurisdiction, out of which some even hid or ran away. While it's true that he did issue multiple exemptions, he did so because they were crucial for the economy and it also should be noted than many exemptions were subsequently disregarded and their holders still deported while some exemptions had to be bought for a hefty sum and even then disregarded and their holders deported. Here comes another lie which tries to hide this fact and portray Tiso as some sort of a philanthropist who did it out of the goodness of his heart. --Martin4x4 (talk) 17:27, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

"ranking the Slovak passport 11th in the world"

I looked up the source for this statement in the final paragraph of the lede, and it's clear the summary is misleading. The source puts 28 other countries higher than Slovakia. That means Slovakia is 29th, not 11th. Slovakia is at the 11th level from the top, but it's not the 11th highest passport. The table in the source is a bit misleadingly presented and it's an understandable mistake. MartinPoulter (talk) 19:15, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

I note that User talk:Peter1170 reverted my edit, putting the incorrect information back in the article. I raised this with him on his Talk page, inviting him to participate in the discussion here and in this edit he deleted the question from his Talk page. Peter, rather than being combative, please take part in the discussion and build consensus for the change you want. MartinPoulter (talk) 19:24, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
MartinPoulter, thank you for your mediation. Perhaps you can be the oil on the water of this image dispute as well. User:Peter1170, if you keep being uncommunicative, and if you continue edit warring/reverting, you will find yourself running into a block sooner or later. Drmies (talk) 02:35, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

Image usage

Due to recent reverts concerning some edits of the article's images I am briefly highlighting the reasoning. Albeit it should get clear by some edit summaries and the edits itself, the ratio behind the edits was to portray the article according to the Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Images. Images should help the article, but hardly stand for itself. They should highlight the information. Massive amounts of galleries or sandwiching are more hurting than helping. Moreover everytime possible quality, or featured images were used. In case there are any questions, especially by you Peter, feel free to ask, yet in a civil manner.--Joobo (talk) 07:50, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

Valdalism to GDP figures

There have been several incidents over the last few days of IP editors trying to input false data on the GDP and GDP per capita figures that disagree with the Economy of Slovakia article (which at least has an IMF sourcing). Are there any editors involved in this article who can clarify the data? thanks. Britishfinance (talk) 19:41, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Romania invaded in 1968 or not?

In the section about the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion it says both that Romania did invade alongside others in the Warsaw Pact but also that it didn't invade alongside with Albania. So which is it? Did Romania invade or not? (A Warsaw Pact nation such as The GDR was supposed to be listed as an invader but the writer became confused and put Romania in both lists?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr gobrien (talkcontribs) 19:40, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

Passport ranking

I commented a few years ago that the article was misleading about the position of Slovakia in the Henley Passport Ranking. Back then User:Peter1170 pushed information back into the article which contradicted the cited source. I thought the claim had been removed form the article but on closer look it has moved from the lead into the body of the article. Before I fixed it just now, the text in the Foreign Relations section said "In 2019, Slovak citizens had visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 181 countries and territories, ranking the Slovak passport 9th in the world." As anyone who checks the source can see, the rating puts 26 other countries ahead of Slovakia. It shouldn't be this hard to keep easily falsifiable statements out the article. MartinPoulter (talk) 23:03, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

The source directly saying - Rank 10th together with Lithuania and Hungary. Slovakia sharing the same position with these countries. If there is information, Slovak passport is 27th, its false information and someone can understand it wrongly - 26 countries havent stronger passport then Slovakia, right? I really dont understand how you can think its number 27. Also CNN, Daily Mail or Forbes in their articles using this ranking, Slovak passport is everywhere ranked 10th: https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/henley-index-world-best-passport-2020/index.html or https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7873627/Japan-worlds-powerful-passport.html or https://www.forbes.com/sites/duncanmadden/2020/01/10/the-most-powerful-passports-in-the-world-in-2020/#439ac04e4c41 Peter1170 (talk) 11:41, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
@Peter1170: Yes, twenty six countries have a higher-rated passport than Slovakia, as shown in the source we're discussing and the links you've given. SLovakia is at the tenth rank, but the meaning of that is different from the claim that its passport is the tenth most powerful in the world. So to say that this one country's passport is ranked 10 or 11 in the world is misleading and contradicts those sources. (The Forbes link seems confused about how ranking works). Thanks at least for discussing this rather than just deleting the comments as you have in the past. If you won't yield on this, we need to take the next steps in dispute resolution. MartinPoulter (talk) 13:07, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
I seriously even dont remember we discussed this in the past. I will be really glad if some admin or anyone else will solve this problem. Thanks.Peter1170 (talk) 14:30, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
@Peter1170: I'm offering to solve the problem, but you revert me. Simple question: are you going to continue to assert that "26 countries havent stronger passport then Slovakia" when the 26 countries are listed in the sources you're using? Are you going to continue to call the 27th rank "false information"? Let's sort this out be reasoned discussion. MartinPoulter (talk) 13:02, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
@MartinPoulter: So, if we write there - As of April 1, 2020 Slovak citizens had visa-free or visa on arrival access to 181 countries and territories, ranking the Slovak passport 10th in terms of travel freedom (tied with Lithuanian and Hungarian passports), then its fine for you? If you check Henley Passport Index, there is 26 countries above Slovakia, but as you can see by yourself, some countries just sharing same position. I cant see number 27 beside the Slovak flag, there is clearly written: Rank 10 - Slovakia - 181 countries.Peter1170 (talk) 20:47, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
