editThe increase in BDNF is actually adaptative to neuronal damage and it quickly become maladaptative[1]. Studies in mices that shows neuronal deaths only after 2 days REM sleep deprivation are misguided for us because mice sleeps 1/3 the amount of REM sleep as we do and Caspase-3, which can be used as a proxy for neurons deaths, kills 3 times the amount in humans than in mices[2]. Something also not accounted in most of the studies is that REMSD induces lasting (> 20 days) neuronal apoptosis in mice[3].
If this therapy sounds like a bad idea, it is because it is. Particulary because unlike depression, neurological effects due to long-term sleep deprivation are life-long lasting and cannot be treated currently. Something must be put as a warning because this article may encourage harmful behaviour as it is. Hploter (talk) 18:56, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Comment Obvious merge, but why should the merged article take the title Sleep Deprivation Therapy rather than Wake therapy? :3 F4U (they/it) 13:53, 16 March 2023 (UTC)"Wake therapy" does have many more Google results, (3,700,000) compared to "sleep deprivation's" 17,600. Joyous! Noise! 14:36, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Good point, more meaningful I think are the ones of G scholar (931 k vs 262 k) but sleep deprivation is more chracteristic of the thing, because we are naturally awake 2/3 of the time, and quantity does not mean quality. Otherwise "prolonged" or "extended" "wake therapy" would do it but I think it is adds convolution. Hploter (talk) 17:52, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
Comment Both articles are roughly the same size, Wake therapy (that has way more search-hits) is 14 years older than the Deprivation article. This merge should be Sleep Deprivation therapy → Wake therapy, not the other way around. Moving discussion. GenQuest "scribble" 19:35, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
- If Wake therapy is older and gets more hits, shouldn't it be
Sleep Deprivation therapy → Wake therapy
and not Wake therapy → Sleep Deprivation therapy? :3 F4U (they/it) 19:55, 21 March 2023 (UTC)- Yes. Sorry. corrected above. GenQuest "scribble" 22:13, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
