Someone posted this comment into the actual article

edit

Moving it into here, as it is clearly first person commentary criticizing the article. Not sure how there wasn't any bots that caught this one:

"The author of this article about skimboarding is ignorant. Anyone who does not credit the Hawaiians with creating skimboarding is just plain uninformed. It has been documented countless times that they invented surfing and skimboarding was right there with it, done on something called a paipo. It is a very short wood board, usually used for bodysurfing was and sliding along the shore. I have a picture of my mother, Marion Haines, doing this as a child in 1928 at Kailua Beach on Oahu. In addition, Victoria Skimboards is totally responsible for reviving the sport in the mid 70's at Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach, California. Tex Haines and Peter Prietto were the founders and the business still survives today. The UST is a tour organized by a rival skimboard company, that has virtually bought the sport during the last 12 years or so, by funding7 of the top 10 riders with salaries far an above the industry average.

I would love a chance to rewrite this story, it is factually incorrect on a large number of accounts. The information about injuries coming from a English hospital is hilarious. There is virtually no skimboarding in England except on beaches as flat a pool tables and waves have nothing to do with it there. Equally valid information might be had about skimboarding from Nome, Alaska.

Tex Haines Co-founder and President of Victoria Skimboards and widely regarded as the Father of Skimboarding in the modern times."

This article is bad and does not all represent the sport. By taking away Skimonline and Foreverskim...people have no clue what is going on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.27.187.139 (talk) 19:53, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Skimboardin picture (Paulo Prietto)

edit

OK, I'm not a skimboarder, myself, but from my experience (sitting on the beach)the current picture of Paulo Prietto at the top of the article shows him surfing, not skimboarding. I find it hard to believe that he got that wave by skimming from the beach. Anyone want to elaborate on this? --Swift 21:48, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

neither am I but the person who posted it seems to know a lot about skimmboarding. (and the picture was taken from Skimonline.com) --Nonameplayer 17:13, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
That's good enough for me! --Swift 17:01, 3 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Once the wave is being ridden back to shore, it bascially is surfing (although Prietto is riding a skimboard in the picture). That's what makes the sport fun and unique.....you get a mix of surfing and gliding, depending upon your skill level. The other great thing is you can do it in the ocean, rivers, lakes, anywhere where water meets sand (or other smooth terrain). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.187.252.130 (talkcontribs) 19:11, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

That's a skimboard and Paulo is amazing on it. If you want to see some sweet footage check out the DVD Beard ed. That has some sick skimming. --Pablo

yes that is skimboarding, in a year i am gonna skim there too. That is the wedge in newport beach, CA. www.skimonline.com, www.exileskimboards.com.

ps: bearded is the sickest skimming video out there.- cali*skimmer

Skimming at the wedge is insane! You'd have to be pro as to be able to skim there. - Adrian, repn New Zealand skimboarding.

meaning of "skim"??

edit

What exact meaning of "skim" is the etymology of skimboarding? http://www.thefreedictionary.com/skim

I'm trying to think how it should be properly translated in a language like Esperanto, using only Esperanto words.

--Sonjaaa 20:18, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Merriam-Webster OnLine says:

Etymology: Middle English skymmen, skemen, probably from Anglo-French escumer, from escume foam, scum, of Germanic origin; akin to Middle Dutch schum scum

techniques

edit

ive been skimming for a couple of years now and i have learned you eat complete shit when you step on the board one foot at a time. i stepped one at a time and pulled my groin because one foot was going way faster than the other. i dont know if im doing this wrong but i always jump on the board, but i jump from behind so i get speed. Chunkus34 23:41, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bro - it takes practice, you have to be going the same speed as the board. Some boarders step front foot first others back foot. Do what seems natural to you.

And yeah, it is important that even if you are running at the same speed as the board is gliding, by the time you're ready to get on it, you need to get your second foot on as soon as possible after your first. It needs to be done in one smooth motion, like the half-revolution of the pedals when you're on a bicycle (when one pedal goes "up", the other goes "down".) What I tell people who want to try it is to imagine that you are running onto more sand or water, and not the board. In this way you will have less of a tendency to "jump" on the board which is not the best method. You should be running onto to the board with your feet as level as if the board wasn't there. It's all about a smooth transition from the sand to the board. By jumping onto it you will lose balance, and create a lot of avoidable friction that will slow the board's speed greatly. Of course this all takes practice, so keep at it! It's great feeling when you nail it.

Skimboarding in Australia

edit

The section on skimboarding in Australia seems odd. Why is Australia singled out? What about skimboarding in other countries such as Brazil, France, England? In any case, there needs to be a date for the introduction into Australia. I don't know the era of the two gentlemen mentioned, but I witnessed a skimboarding craze on the Gold Coast in the mid 1960s. Some citation for these two gentlemen's founding is also required. Robert P. O'Shea 01:42, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

that is skimboarding, at the wedge in newport, CA. there are a lot of videos of him skimming the wedge on the internet. www.skimonline.com.

Yeah, that section is kind of awkward. I think the whole history section could flow a bit better too.

i reckon and what about New Zealand Skimboarding!! Well.. Theres a whole website dedicated to New Zealand skimboarding and skimboarders... at [nzskim[1]]! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.155.136.174 (talk) 09:33, 2 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

This article sucks

edit

Looks like retards just jumped in and added crap all over the place. Who is Ethan Mora? Probably vandalism and if not there are like 1000 better examples of a skimboarder people may have actually heard of. Then the part where the kids like "I just want to jump in and say a wood board is better on thick water" LOL. I am so gonna tear this article a new ass when I have more free time and clean out all the garbage. Dontbiteit 10:20, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed bro, some serious garbage in here. Someone needs to wash it all out and make a legit page from scratch if you ask me. Looks like some kooks from arkansas wrote this. -Kai 5:38 26 September 2007

I just removed some of the most blatant biased and unsourced info, I'm guessing it will just be re-added by the fanboys, but it made me feel better :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.78.154.82 (talk) 15:45, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Article is horrible

edit

I have edited this article TWICE.

I put notable figures in skimboarding...changed the photos.

But really this is horrible and does not even reflect the sport of skimboarding.

If some of the mods could calm down then wow maybe it would be good. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Narwhalhistory (talkcontribs) 07:05, 13 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

This article needs to be rewritten.

edit

There is some serious bias against flatland skimboarding. Personally, I live by the coast and could do either, but I find the variety in technique and tricks to be much more interesting in flatland, and that wave riders tend to just be surfers who are too lazy to paddle out, but I wouldn't state that as fact in a wikipedia article. I don't know if the entire article needs to be re-written, but anything that dismisses half of the sport or states opinions as facts (such as where the best skimboarding spot in the world is) should be removed. If you want to write a fanboy page for the Victoria skimboarding team, than do that elsewhere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.78.154.82 (talk) 15:36, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's very poorly written. Little evidence to support the claims, lots of bias, and lots of mistakes. It might be easier to rewrite this article from scratch than to fix it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.121.139.152 (talk) 10:10, 9 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

It also reeks of advertisements. The first pillar of Wikipedia is Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, which says Wikipedia is not an advertisement platform. Therefore every single entry in this list must show an evidence that it is not an advertisement and actually have popular acceptance. A Wikipedia article or at least one citation in reliable secondary sources is required. That means people are not allowed to create a user account only to advertise the product of that company here, especially one that corresponds to their company name. Extreme sport?

edit

Skimboarding is mentioned as an extreme sport, but nothing supporting this in the text. --— Erik Jr. 20:46, 31 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Style to fix

edit

As long as the conditions are right and safe then no injuries should occur anyways, therefor Injury can be avoided by the riders choices before skim boarding .
