editThis is the second page I've found that refers to William Beckett as a member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. He's a twenty-two year old singer in an indie rock band (The Academy Is...), and lives in the USA. This dude was dead before William was born. Redspark09 22:39, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- It's undoubtedly true that William Beckett was a British MP - indeed, there were have been several. However, William Beckett on Wikipedia is the US musician. What is needed is some disambiguation. The name William Beckett is common enough in Anglo-Saxon societies for there to have been several notable people with it, and it's difficult to say one of them is clearly the most important. Oh, alright. Thanks Redspark09 17:46, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm not 100% sure but it does appear that he was a prominent opponent of laws to ban child labour. See http://dogma.free.fr/txt/AF_democratic-rationalization.htm
Sir J. Graham, therefore urged caution: "We have arrived at a state of society when without commerce and manufactures this great community cannot be maintained. Let us, as far as we can, mitigate the evils arising out of this highly artificial state of society; but let us take care to adopt no step that may be fatal to commerce and manufactures."
I imagine J Graham = James Graham - the bills' dates match his lifespan... Davidbrake
