Inaccuracies edit

Hey, guys! I read that on U-boat.net 407 people were on board and 260 of them died . Why does this page say that there were 406 people on the boat and that 258 of them died?! Also, Uboat.net says the ship sank on September 18, not September 17! I will be changing this soon! SS Titan 1782 (talk) 14:08, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello SS Titan 1782, there were in fact 406 people on board. Although uboat.net reports that there were 407 people on board, there were actually 406. I have researched this shipwreck for quite some time and Uboat.net and a only one book (that only mentions the sinking) are the only sources I found that reported 260 deaths out of 407. Tom Nagorski, who is the nephew of the Polish passenger named Bohdan Nagorski, has written a book about this tragedy called Miracles on the Water: The Heroic Survivors of a World War II U-boat Attack, which I recommend reading if you are interested in this event (along with Torpedoed by Deborah Heiligman and Children of the Benares by Ralph Barker). These books along with records of the Nuremberg War Trial state that 258 out of 406 on board died.
As for the dates, Uboat.net has also recorded this wrong. These books, survivor accounts, newspapers, condolences from the Children's Overseas Reception Board, and the log from U-48, all state that the ship sank on September 17, 1940. The log and the books also agree that the ship was hit at 22.03 hours and sank at 22.34 hours, which, converted to 12 hour time, would be 10:03 PM and 10:34 PM.
