Bunker Silo Image Issue edit

The image of the bunker silo does not appear to be a bunker silo. It may be a type of covered bunker silo but it does not match the description in the bunker silo section.

Better examples of bunker silos are available on Google Images

The article describes the canonical meaning of "silo". No article has a superior claim on the simple term. Furthermore, the descriptor "storage" is redundant, unnecessary, and somewhat confusing. ENeville (talk) 01:16, 25 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good to me. Andrewa (talk) 06:14, 25 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agree and, as you stated at WP:RM, this would go ahead: SiloSilo (disambiguation) --Lox (t,c) 19:57, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per ENeville well-worded proposal. JPG-GR (talk) 05:27, 31 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Very sparse article. Add to this, or split off into other articles? edit

This article could use some extensive additions and modifications. Since I live on a small dairy farm I have ready access to a forage silo and could add a wide variety of photos and movies to this page. The question I have is whether this should go into a separate article dedicated to tower/forage silos since there is so much additional information that could be added, which may not apply to other types such as bunker silos. Well, it took me about 11 months to get around to it (harvesting season again now, heh) but I've done some MAJOR additions about concrete stave silo design and usage, with videos and high-resolution pictures. Right now the agricultural silage uses dominate this article but I don't see how to split that off cleanly without leaving the rest of the article a shattered husk. Grain bin edit

Grain bin redirects to this article but there is no mention of grain bins or photos of grain bins (which are very different than forage silos). This is ripe for correction. --BenFranske (talk) 02:49, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Splitting off silos for agriculture edit

There isn't anyone in charge of this article, but it appears to me that this is meant to be a very generalized article for the building structure. as such the agriculture discussion, while important and useful in an encyclopedia, is probably too much for this one article.

I have decided to be WP:BOLD and split off the agriculture material into a new article Silo (agriculture) so that this can return to its very basic original format. This way the article can handle other silo types in depth as other article separations as people add more information.

On further consideration, I am having a hard time deciding how to subdivide this article into new sub-articles. This is mainly due to my lack of experience with all possible types and uses of silos in agriculture. Along what line is a logical division?
  • Article Forage Silo -- Would include stave, low-oxygen, cast concrete, bunker, and bag. Would exclude other foodstuffs such as dried grains, but then we run into a problem ... are bunkers used to store dry grain? They could be, so I don't know if "forage" is too narrow of a division.
  • Article Silo (agriculture) --- Would include both forage and grain silos on farms, though do the huge grain silos by river/ocean terminals also fit into the category? If so then the article division eats 90% of this article.
  • Articles Bag Silo, Stave Silo, Low oxygen silo, Bunker silo --- this would allow for more expansive discussion of each type, but does this now fragment the main article too much? Each of these would need either a large duplicate introduction and/or a link back to this article in the top section.
I will have to think about this some more.. DMahalko (talk) 12:30, 4 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Origin of the word "silo" edit

What is the origin of the word? This is usually addressed in the other wiki pages for each item. Just an idea! 115.70.85.100 (talk) 13:06, 23 July 2010 (UTC)JudithReply

Tower forage silo hazards edit

Please note that the existing section "Tower forage silo hazards" does not contain any reference to nitrogen oxides as an asphyxiation hazard. The Wikipedia article on "Silage" does contain the material on nitrogen oxides.

I believe that the hazard due to nitogen oxides is if anything more dangerous than the methane mentioned in the section referenced above, due to the tendency of the nitrogen oxides to accumulate in the silo.

If the material on agricultural silos is moved off to another location, the section on hazards should be moved, as well as edited to show the discussion on nitrogen oxides. Dc halstead (talk) 01:05, 24 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Silos edit

Can anyone explain why some of the tower silos have basically flat tops and some rounded dome tops..50.139.111.237 (talk) 04:17, 17 February 2014 (UTC)Chuck HodgesReply

Storage of grain edit

From the lead section: "Silos are used in agriculture to store fermented feed known as silage, not to be confused with a grain bin, which is used to store grains." Okay, so silos don't store grain. However, the next sentence begins "Silos are commonly used for bulk storage of grain..." Can anyone help elucidate? HerrWaus (talk) 16:22, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Citations for 'Safety' edit

Much of the 'Safety' section does not have any citations, although the information does not seem irrelevant or dubious enough to warrant cutting the whole thing. Can someone with better knowledge of the subject add citations, or bring this to the attention of someone else who does? 61.1.53.105 (talk) 08:57, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
