Talk:Silencium universi

Lack of sources edit

I've only found one source that points to this term and Lem, namely Walter J. Freeman's Societies of Brains (1995). I have not yet been able to verify the connection between Lem's term and Brin's ("Great Silence") but I believe it is there. I have previously discussed this problem on another discussion page and come to the conclusion that the best thing to do would be to redirect this short stub to Great Silence (astronomy) and expand the topic. The Great Silence is the same thing as the Fermi Problem (often called the Fermi paradox, even though it isn't a paradox, perhaps in part because there is another meaning of Fermi problem [note the lower-case 'p'] known mainly to physicists); it already has an article, with which I agree this one should be merged. In fact, I think it's a pretty uncontroversial proposal, so I'll do it shortly if no-one else does. This should make it possible to present the terms "Great Silence" and "Silencium Universi" in a framework that makes it clear they refer to the same thing, without needing either a direct citation of the use of both terms by one author or an eternal [citation needed] tag (which will eventually result in someone deleting good information; I've seen it before). Hmm. But is 'silentium universi' the same thing as 'the Great Silence'? The Lem quote is
"The well-known silence of the Universe—silentium universi—effectively drowned out by the din of local wars for half a century, was recognized by many astrophysicists as an inarguable fact, since persistent radio monitoring yielded nothing—from the Ozma Project to the many years of effort by the Australians.
Note that Lem spells it right. But I see no clear evidence here of either a distinction or a lack of distinction between 'silentium universi' and 'the Great Silence'. However, a search of the arXiv (which yields only two results for 'silentium universi', both in papers by Ćirković) finds this. Which, if one is willing to regard Ćirković as an authority (I am, more or less), settles the matter. False vacuum (talk) 23:38, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
