Great Addition

That old photograph of signal hill is impressive. Quite different from today. Might be interesting to add a more modern shot—perhaps takend from the West late in the day—for contrast. Anyone got one? Williamborg 18:55, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

RoughNeck Roundup

My father worked for years on the oil rigs, and always took us to an annual event called The RoughNeck Roundup. It was basically an enormous picnic event with musicians, food, games, and a very popular chili cook-off. I'm not sure, but I think that the Roughneck Roundup ended about a dozen years ago.

There also used to be a faux Colonial Spanish "La Fiesta del Oro Negro" (sp? - The Feast of the Black Gold), and I'm wondering if the Roughneck Roundup might have been a replacement for that fiesta. ^BlankVerse 13:44, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Picture of the day

A panoramic view of Signal Hill in 1923, a small city in Southern California. On June 21, 1921, oil was discovered in Signal Hill, part of the Long Beach Oil Field, and the city was soon covered with over 100 oil derricks (seen here). Because of its prickly appearance at a distance, it gained the nickname "Porcupine Hill". Today, most of the oil wells and nodding donkey oil pumps are gone. History
