Please try to avoid mixing chinchilla's species and history in this article. For exemple Mathias F. Chapman bought only Chinchilla Lanigera read here. You can have other useful information here. The true chinchilla brevicaudata is only grey. All others are nuts and mostly offsprings of domesticated wild chinchilla lanigera. They are bigger than lanigera sp. and live much higher in the moutain 
. There way of life is not well known. It is expected that some of theme are still living in remoted upper parts of Andas. See also fresh information about wild chinchillas here. --Salixen 16:42, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
