Shoot (dance move) edit

Can someone create a page about the shoot (dance move)🙏 I am bone123 (talk) 12:49, 3 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 1 July 2023 edit

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved. Pageviews signify there is no argument for WP:PT1 here, and the only !oppose is based on WP:PT2, which is a claim that is rejected by the nom (which multiple !supports refer back to). Directing readers to the DAB page seems to be the safe call here. There also seems to be more of a consensus to move the article that was previously at Shoot to Shoot (botany); that move will be carried out. – No clear primary topic, the plant meaning has 3,190 views but Shoot (professional wrestling) has 7,482, Shoot wrestling has 3,817, Shooting has 2,611, Photo shoot has 1,955, Shoot (Burden) has 1,663, Shoot (Mad Men) has 877, Shoot (football magazine) has 445, Shoot (film) has 251, Shoot (Hellblazer) has 209, The Shoot (video game) has 209, The Shoot (film) has 96, Shoot (song) has 89 and Shoot (advertising magazine) has 36[[1]]. By long-term significance the violent act also has long-term significance and the wrestling and photo meanings also have some long-term significance. • Support per nom. No clear primary topic for this title (also, see WP:ASTONISH). The safest bet is to have the disambiguation page at the basename. Paintspot Infez (talk) 02:36, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Plant is primary by longterm significance. If someone was going to look for the gun meaning, they'd specifically type "shooting". And photo shoot's such a tiny article it can easily be merged into Photography#Commercial, so I am not convinced there either. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 05:35, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
I should add that shoot (plant) is not a good target, since it's about a plant concept rather than an individual plant. Shoot (botany) would be the proper target here. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 05:36, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Shoot (botany) is matches the disambiguator used for almost all entries in Category:Plant morphology. Plantdrew (talk) 15:34, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes I'd say based on that and the likes of Bark (botany) that would be a better choice. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:42, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • https://wikinav.toolforge.org/?language=en&title=Shoot indicates ~4.9k incoming views in May '23, and only 65 clicks on the hatnote (~1%), but at the same time it was the #2 clicked link even with such a low volume. This is not really clear by itself, because we can argue both that most readers don't care to read more and that it's effectively a dead end for navigation (i.e. that we should want to encourage reading more). Because "shoot" is also a very common English verb, not just a noun, I would err on the side of caution and disambiguate. Certainly it can be done as an experiment and we can check the stats for a few months afterwards, and see if navigation outcomes have changed or improved. --Joy (talk) 08:03, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
WP:NOTDICTIONARY applies - disambiguations should not be there solely because a word is common. There need to be multiple competing primary topics under the same name. In this case I don't think any other topic rises to that level. The most major alternate topic is a pro wrestling term, but while it gets more views, it lacks longterm significance in comparison to a basic botany concept. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 09:22, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Sure, but we also habitually combine topic titles, and "shooting" is one of the contenders for "shoot". --Joy (talk) 09:48, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nom. As said above "No clear primary topic for this title (also, see WP:ASTONISH). The safest bet is to have the disambiguation page at the basename." Quite In ictu oculi (talk) 20:28, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Leaning support on the strength of page views (though I think this is a close call), with Shoot (botany) as the preferred new title for the botany article. I note that such a thing as a Turkey shoot also exists. BD2412 T 02:52, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
"Turkey shoot" would likely never simply be referred to as a "shoot". WP:PTM applies there. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 11:33, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Zxcvbnm: I am aware of that, but "Turkey shoot" is exemplary of the use of "shoot" as a noun to indicate a a shooting event. Variations like "fox shoot" and "pigeon shoot" are also attested. BD2412 T 00:49, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nom. -- 64.229.90.172 (talk) 06:09, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nom. No primary topic. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:18, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nomination, Paintspot Infez, In ictu oculi, BD2412, 64.229.90.172, Necrothesp and also per comment by Joy. Would likewise support the alternative option ShootShoot (botany) per ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ, Plantdrew and BD2412. The various meanings of "shoot" may remind users of the punctuation examples in Eats, Shoots & Leaves. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 04:53, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Since the move in July, we have many months of page view stats[2] and outgoing clickstreams:

August (1535)
  • Shoot_(botany) link 172
  • Shooting link 32
  • Shoot_(professional_wrestling) link 23
  • Shoot_(football_magazine) link 14
  • Shoot_(Burden) link 13
September (1244)
  • Shoot_(botany) link 127
  • Shooting link 23
  • Shoot_(professional_wrestling) link 14
  • Shoot_(football_magazine) link 11
  • Shoot_(film) link 10
October (1022)
  • Shoot_(botany) link 114
