Ngau Tau Island

Ngau Tau Island as alias? Apparently there is an old law that called an islet off Shelter Island as Ngau Tau Island (https://oelawhk.lib.hku.hk/items/show/3092) as part of the definition of Port Shelter Area (and the definition had been replaced, see Port Shelter#As Specified Sheltered Waters). Does it means Ngau Tau Pai? And apparently it was mis-mentioned in SCMP as collided with a 15-metre fishing boat near Ngau Tau island off Lantau Island. But Lantau Island is located in the Western Waters of HK, and Shelter Island is located in Eastern Waters. Matthew hk (talk) 10:12, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

Ok, it seem it means a former island of the same name. The island, due to land reclamation, already became part of zh:桂山島 according to zh-wiki without citation. Matthew hk (talk) 10:41, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

History

Secondary source needed to be dig out for pre 1860s history. For some reason it was not appeared in Qing's Gazetteer of Xin'an, probably just due to the book is not a complete collection of the place name, which quite a lot of name was missing for the modern day Sai Kung. Also, secondary source needed to be dig out for the etymology. Based on MMIS system of the HK Public Libraries and Google Books, it seem HK scholar 鲁金 may possibly wrote an article for a newspaper that talks about the possible origins of the Chinese name. However, the article is not online readable. Also it may be UNDUE to say it is "The" explanation, which alternative source and theory should be dig out. I can't read Southern District Officer Reports: Islands and Villages in Rural Hong Kong online, so despite the book claims the island was uninhabited , it missing the time to make the statement relevant. And i am unable to view the full page from Google Book preview, so unable to determine it is uninhabited since British rule, or since the establishment of the Port Shelter Firing Range. Forgot i have uni account. And the chapter is one paragraph long about the island and another longer paragraph for a fisherman lives in Kau Sai . Which Kau Sai is not equal to Shelter Island . By that single sentence , the island was uninhabited when it was part of the firing range. I need citation to prove it always uninhabited or the population was evacuated by the establishment of the firing range, just like other islands of the range and per source.
