Shane Dawson is an American Comedian from Valley Village, California. He is well known for his YouTube comedy videos, his channel ShaneDawsomTV is currently number five most subscribed of all time and is also notable for starring in other channels such ShaneDawsomTV2 and The Station. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anthonybecerra831 (talkcontribs) 03:26, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Just make the page Shanes famous enough to get one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Halen99 (talkcontribs) 05:28, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
This guy is a major persona on Youtube. Two of his channels are in the top ten. Many other Youtube celebrities have their own pages. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Factsofphotos (talkcontribs) 21:18, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
I don't think this page should be deleted. I had been on for just a very few hours and should be given time until it catches some momentum. Shane Dawson is a very well know youtube celebrity and his channel is the 4th most subscribed channel of all time (take a look here). He has also been very influential and is getting subscriptions at a high rate (higher than Fred, for instance). I have come to the conclusion that what I have in mind should be an article about Shane's channel instead of Shane himself. Please inform me of so if I am correct! --Dyaa (talk) 02:10, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Shane is now the 3rd most subscribed on YouTube. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.71.145.100 (talk) 15:07, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

New York Times article

Forbes magazine and other things found during the AFD showed plenty of mainstream media coverage. Plus common sense says anything this popular, one of the most subscribed to channels on YouTube, is notable. The deletion of the article was a mistake, clearly. Dream Focus 18:58, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
I recently saw that I had missed that AfD. Glad to see the NYT has legitimated the guy for inclusion (though he was clearly legitimate long ago). --Milowent (talk) 05:43, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

PICTURE

Why is the picture deleted?

Probably because it violated copyright laws and had no valid fair-use rationale to be included on Wikipedia, especially when a free picture could be used even if it doesn't exist, currently. Mike Allen 05:54, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Irrelevant Material

Seriously, why do you keep adding trivial pieces of information to the article? Do

He recently revealed he had auditioned for a role in Scream 4, and even got a callback. A few days later he hinted that he got a part, claiming that he "just got some amazing news" regarding his acting career, which he posted on his Twitter.

deserve being put on Wikipedia? Dyaa (talk) 23:21, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Nope it doesn't. Especially when the only source is his twitter feed. YouTube and Twitter are not valid or third-party sources. Mike Allen 05:48, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

The award section currently cite: "As of 2010, Shane Dawson has been nominated for various awards, winning many." However, only 2 are listed. It also include information information about the award itself, which should be on the award's wiki page, not here. I suggest the text under this section removed (keeping only the award listing table) because it is either redundant or otherwise not worth mentioning.222.252.111.43 (talk) 13:44, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Mr. Youtube...?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpv76oKJdXU -- As seen here, Shawn Dawson was crowned Mr. Youtube for 2009 and I saw that it was neglected to be mentioned anywhere so I just thought I would point that out. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.6.94.4 (talk) 06:18, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't know what the "SOFIXIT" reference was for, because the page is locked - but my sources are nothing more than, oh I don't know, THE VIDEOS!? I watched Shane accept his award for VLogger of the Year on a Podium, and I watched him get announced Mr. Youtube by "WHATTHEBUCK" ... he is also nominated for a Teen Choice award, but I guess you want proof on that too, right? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.240.147.21 (talk) 11:38, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, proof (otherwise known as credible news or reference sources) of items included in an article would be appropriate. Learn how Wikipedia works. This isn't TMZ. 74.92.211.210 (talk) 13:42, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Edit request from Audreyybee, 30 June 2010

{{editsemiprotected}}

Shane Dawson is currently dating close friend Leslie A. but has tried to keep it on the down-low so that she wont have to deal with crazy fans or haters. She doesn't have a youtube channel at the current time. they have been dating for almost four months and are very committed and happy with their current relationship. This is submitted by a close friend to Leslie A. who has decided she wants people to know of their relationship and wishes to surprise him on their coming anniversary by showing him his wiki page with this edit. Audreyybee (talk) 18:24, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Actually, it is perfectly relevant that he is the third most subbed on one of the world's top ten trafficked web sites. Airplaneman 18:25, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it is totally relevant that Shane is the 3rd most subscribed on the 3rd most visited website on the internet, YouTube. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.71.145.100 (talk) 15:10, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Notability

I see this article is tagged for potential lack of "notability," but I don't think there's a question of notability as to Shane Dawson. Sure, there are only a few youtubers which are truly notable, but he is one of them. See, e.g., [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. I open this section to seek consensus that the notability tags can be removed.--Milowenttalkblp-r 14:30, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Well, it would be great if you could include all of this material and references in the article. That's what the notability tag is for, to allow editors to find material from reliable sources that would make him notable according to Wikipedia. Having it on the talk page really doesn't help.  :) Mike Allen 19:01, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
I agree with Mike and support Milowent's claims of notability. Airplaneman 05:13, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Handling the Annoying Orange was too much for me, the thought of actually sourcing Shane too is a lower priority on my list, but I hope some fan will run with it.:-)--Milowenttalkblp-r 05:32, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm no Shane Dawson fan (nor a hater - Nigahiga FTW!) but I'll see what I can do in the next few days. Airplaneman 05:41, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Well in that case, I guess it does help to have the links on the talk page. I know there's a template you can place at the top of a talk page and include helpful links. Mike Allen 05:45, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Career

Since his previous occupation directly lead him into his partnership with youtube, it might be worth mentioning. I'd also like to note that because there has been various reuploads of this video on youtube itself, it probably was not deemed inappropriate by youtube and was deleted by Shane himself.

"A year ago, Dawson was working in sales for weight-loss company Jenny Craig and made a video on company property that he posted on YouTube. His employers deemed it inappropriate and fired him. A Jenny Craig spokesperson confirmed this. (YouTube has since deleted the video.) With no luck finding a new job, Dawson focused on YouTube videos and trying to get into the Partner Program. Once he was accepted, the checks began arriving." - USA Today

I was wondering if anyone thinks there should be a page about Shane Dawson as a fictional character and the universe in his videos, including descriptions of characters like Shananae and Ned. Looks like we had an edit war in progress. Let me be clear, there are no innocent parties in an edit war and blocks can be issued even if you don't technically violate the three revert rule. So how about you both discuss here instead, since the page is now protected to stop your edit war from continuing. If edit warring resumes when the protection expires, all involved parties can expect to be blocked. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:27, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

I thought it was settled... but any way I woke up this morning to find DAshbot telling me I had an Orphaned image. Naturally surpised and found editor it removed it with no edit summary. So in my edit summary I am like How did that get removed? thinking it got lost in some of the vandlaism of recently. I check back and found a really sarcastic comment. Which leaves me like Go hash it out on the talk page on why you think this should be removed The response is was to he responded my noming it for Speedy Deletion under the WP:F8 criteria. delete this copyright infringement already and then removes the image again. I revert saying what it is and not copyright infringement. That it had a valid fair use tag thus ineligible for such criteria. He reverts me Demanding I meet the Requirements Which of Course are already met thus . revert and slapped with the Speedy Deletion removal notice and subsquently Reports me to the vandalism Board. I go to his talk page and try to explain [WP:F8] criteria. IT was of course Declined as not vandalism He stopped thus I assumed after that so I was under the impression it was over. The Resident Anthropologist (talk) 20:33, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
And now an uninvolved admin has reviewed the fair use Rationale and determined it as not replaceable with a free image The Resident Anthropologist (talk) 00:35, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm not interested in an explanation of why you were edit warring. There is no reason you can give other than reverting blatant and obvious vandalism that excuses it. There is no right and wrong in an edit war, anyone who participates is wrong. Edit warring always makes things worse and never helps, so please just don't do it even if you know you are right and the other person is wrong. Beeblebrox (talk) 02:15, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
ok fair enoughThe Resident Anthropologist (talk) 02:18, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
For the record if you are in a dispute with just one other editor WP:3O is a good way to get a quick opinion from a third party, and there are many other forms of dispute resolution available, as well as page protection. These are all acceptable alternatives to edit warring. Beeblebrox (talk) 02:36, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Criticism

Shane has received numerous critics over the vulgarity(joking about school shootings, rape, suicide etc.)<redacted> Of his videos and noted in an interview he wants to appeal to a younger audience primarily from Nickleodion and other television stations like it which are believed to be too young for that type of humor. It has also been noted that he has little to no regard for the tenderness or severity of a serious situation such as Rape, Murder, Suicide, Racism, etc. He has also been known for gross misuse of the Youtube rules and regulations. Putting in titles that have nothing to do with his videos, using thumbnail pictures featuring female body parts such as their breasts when they are also nowhere in the video to be found(or mentioned), this is believed to be his ploy for gaining views from youtubers who are not familiar with his videos. He's also been heavily criticized for asking random questions that have little to nothing to do with the content of his videos at the end so it will be bumped up in the most commented video and be featured on the front page for more views. In the past he was discovered to have spammed the comment section on one of his own videos the word "agreed" many times for several hours(until the sock account was undoubtedly reported and was suspended presumably)for gaining more views. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.48.143.213 (talk) 07:58, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Where are all these critical reviews from (links?)? Or is it just from you? —Mike Allen 09:43, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
The critical views are coming from youtubers such as TheArchFiend, GusMonkeyTV,YTwatchdog, and InquisitiveJoe. The only personal criticism I put in that is the "Random Question" part. And even then it was more of a stem off of an Archfiend video where he stated "people he doesn't give a S**t what you say he wants you to leave a comment so his videos will get bumped up in the most commented". I just noticed the majority of his questions have nothing to do with what he was talking about. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.48.143.213 (talk) 18:42, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Shane dawson has been known to tag load his videos. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/04/fashion/04youtube.html This source was used previously but for unknown reason was taken off of the bio page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.14.33.227 (talk) 17:05, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

The reason isn't unknown, the editor who did so wrote in the edit summary "source doesn't say any of that". 117Avenue (talk) 23:03, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
That is right. The source did not say he has drawn controversy because of his "vulgar nature, with his humor often being considered repetitive, inappropriate, and even, by some accounts, lame." See WP:BLPREMOVE. —Mike Allen 01:11, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Is tag loading, using missleading thumbnails and text really how to get ahead. Shanes videos are a little bit on the mature side yet I have feeling youtube goes by a family guy standards of whats 14. Most of the issue is should youtube count it as exceptable if a partner mentions the title for a second. Most of this does branch over toward a youtube critism. Why would youtube get rid of a person making them money. Youtube has dirrectly mentioned that they have a class system.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wud2RPC8Yj0&feature=channel_video_title its very arguable that the guy in the video didn't try to follow up with questions overall just wasn't a very good interviewer. The video suggests there is a class system for youtubers. Has fred done anytype of missleading thumbnail or text. Most of freds videos are very streight forward. Here is an example of a video that probably should be flag yet strangely isn'thttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOhYCwEQzik I do appolgize for the length and the tone.--24.14.33.227 (talk) 03:35, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Shanes mother has also stated that Shane auditioned for a Mcdonalds commercial (and go the part) but because of his last name they thought he was asian, and asked him to change his last name for the purpose of his career. Shane and his mother were thinking of names and both said Dawson at the excat same moment (for the reason of titanic stated above) and thus Shane Dawson was born. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shae liz (talkcontribs) 05:57, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

It mentions Shanes Father, but it doesn't mention Shanes older brother Jared, or his eldest brother Jacob. Jacob was adopted by Shanes mom and dad before he was born due to the fact that his mother wasn't supposed to get pregnant. Jacob has cerebral palsy. When Jacob was 5, Teresa got pregnant with Jared, and then a few years later, got pregnant with Shane. I feel this should atleast somewhat we included. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shae liz (talkcontribs) 05:54, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Sourcing and other WP:BLP issues

I'm posting in response to sourcing issues raised on the BLP Noticeboard. I'd like to invite editors already involved here to help make this living person's biography into an encyclopedic article. Noticeboard volunteers will likely pitch in and, hopefully, leave helpful comments. Some major improvements this article needs are:

  • Regarding BLP policy, NOR policy: Right now, the article is rather heavily reliant on the subject's self-publication as a source. While some use of this subject's YouTube channel is to be expected (he's apparently notable because of YouTube), no self-publication should be used to support claims that are self-serving or claims about third parties. Nor should self-publications comprise the primary basis of text in an article. That means claims involving persons other than the subject himself, claims that are self-serving, and other substantial swaths of text that have no other source should probably go unless a better source is found to support them.
  • Regarding the BLP policy, "Not" policy, POV policy, and the coat rack essay: Some content, especially that based on primary sources, contains level of detail that is not encyclopedic. If an event is actually biographically trivial or insignificant, it should be excluded. Coverage by at least one reliable third party would help indicate the enduring biographical significance of an event, such as a relationship, an abstinence pledge as a teenager, or a firing. The same goes for details on the subject's works. If they're worth mentioning, someone other than the subject himself will have done so. That isn't to say every detail has to be independently notable by any means, but everything does have to be presented in a way that assigns it due weight.

If anyone has ideas, be bold and improve sourcing and content. Happy editing! JFHJr () 00:44, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Under the paragraph titled "2013–present: Shane and Friends, Television, and The Chair", please change the following text "In response, many of Shane's YouTube channel subscribers started a Twitter protest campaign, using the hashtag #ShaneDawsonSony.[citation needed]" to "The video, which possessed various violent acts like Dawson killing his girlfriend, a security guard and Taylor Swift, created large controversy when it was taken down. Shane's YouTube channel subscribers started a Twitter protest campaign using the hashtag #ShaneDawsonSony in order to create awareness for the situation. The hashtag trended worldwide, compelling other video makers like REACT! to also voice their concerns through Twitter about Sony's censorship. The Twitter protest was successful, allowing the Blank Space parody to be released on YouTube." <ref>{{cite web|last1=Parra|first1=Sara|title=Shane Dawson Parody Pulled for Coypright Infringement? #shanedawsonsony|url=http://newmediarockstars.com/2014/12/shane-dawson-parody-pulled-for-copyright-infringement-shanedawsonsony/|website=NMR|publisher=New Media Rockstars|accessdate=1 March 2015}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|last1=Ore|first1=Jonathan|title=YouTuber Shane Dawson'S fans revolt after Sony pulls his Taylor Swift parody video|url=http://www.cbc.ca/newsblogs/yourcommunity/2014/12/youtuber-shane-dawsons-fans-revolt-after-sony-pulls-his-taylor-swift-parody-video.html|website=CBC News|publisher=CBC/Radio-Canada|accessdate=1 March 2015}}</ref> JulianneIbby (talk) 21:14, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Controversy

On October 9, 2015, Dawson attracted attention on social media and news sites after expressing extreme aggression towards cyclists in a post on his personal Twitter account, where he proclaimed his temptation to kill cyclists on the road. The entirety of the post read: "I know it's the law but seriously, who the fuck thought people should ride their bikes in the fucking street? literally so tempting to kill"

In the section on Shane's personal life, it mistakenly states that he is dating a fellow YouTuber. The link supposedly confirming this is just to a silly YouTube video of them that has brought up the topic (since proven false) that they are dating. Nowhere in the video does it mention them as a couple. Thanks for clearing this up :)

(non-admin closure)

Shane DawsonShane Yaw – If you look at other youtubers' article names, they are almost always their real names (examples: Daniel Middleton, Joseph Garrett). I don't see any reason why this is different. Minecrafter0271 (talk) 22:59, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

  • Oppose, per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:STAGENAME (etc.). Shane Dawson is the name he's known by and referred to in almost every source (i.e. He's rarely, if ever, referred to by his birth name Shane Yaw). Additionally, there's a difference between someone online being known by their username (like your example "Joseph Garrett" going by "stampylonghead" online), versus someone online going by a name that's actually a name (i.e. a different surname, like "Shane Yaw" going by "Shane Dawson" for example). (...Also, by the way, your other example Daniel Middleton's page is actually at "DanTDM".) But even with that distinction, you still have examples like Felix Kjellberg (whose page is at his widely-used username PewDiePie), so similarities to other pages aren't a great argument when other pages are split. Paintspot Infez (talk) 23:24, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME, never referred to as Shane Yaw anywhere. If there are other articles on YouTubers known by a pseudonym that aren't titled that way, that's a reason to move those pages, not this one. Nohomersryan (talk) 00:17, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose, per above. As long as there is a redirect at Shane Yaw to get the few here that look under the wrong name we’re fine. Gleeanon409 (talk) 11:02, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Why is the "N-Word" repeatedly used? Request for edit.

Why is the term "the n-word" used? The word is "nigger" and can be used in various contexts without causing mass offence - much like the way it's used in the dictionary. A word cannot be offensive by default and depends on how it is used. Using the actual word "nigger" would be much more sensible considering we are adults and can see a controversial word without running from the room screaming with our hair on fire. I'd like this changes please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.201.167.101 (talk) 18:09, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
