Semonkong was First used as a British millitary post by HER MAJESTY Queen Victoria during the 1865 invasion of lesotho which eventually led to the death of the then basotho soveriegn Moshoeshoe the first . After the successful invasion the post was abandoned and the local basotho then chose to settle there as there was already a fair bit of infrastructure left behind by the british troops .
