Is there a general definition of this functions for all locally compact groups that works without defining the same thing in several special cases before the genereal definition is possible? 84.139.137.80 (talk) 15:51, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

How can a locally constant function of compact support at a non-archimedean places be equal to the characteristic function of the integers? The integers (Z) are not compact in any non-trivial non-archimedian valuation since Z is bounded, but not closed.--Roentgenium111 (talk) 21:48, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
