Schmidtsdrift → Schmidtsdrif – This is the spelling that is used by the 2011 census and the name by which it appears on Google Maps. - Comment: I checked the official CD:NGI map and it shows "Schmidtsdrif", no "t". But the road signs on the ground say "Schmidtsdrift" with a "t", as can be seen on Google Street View here and here. I don't know which way we should go with this one. - htonl (talk) 07:36, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

- I had not noticed that. Judging by Google results that does also appear to be an accepted spelling. Really this goes to prove that the NC Department of Roads is not a reliable source for town names. - htonl (talk) 01:28, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
- Schmidsdrift/drif (without the middle "t") is definitely not an accepted spelling. When I have time I will look more into the history of the place and provide more detailed primary references on its name. But for now I would certainly agree with Htonl that road signs of the present generation are not reliable evidence on place names - see my note below about "Barkley West" aka Barkly West. Kimberley tends to be correctly indicated in road signs but in print is often incorrectly given as Kimberly (again, some spell-checkers had tended to suggest the American version).Blarcrean (talk) 17:13, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

- Comment. For what it's worth, the Google Books hits for the -drift spelling outnumber those for -drif, 167–40. Deor (talk) 13:05, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
- Comment. As a local resident I can but point out that the historical and, in my view, correct spelling is Schmidtsdrift. In Afrikaans, however, it may well be rendered as "Schmidtsdrif". On a related point, many road signs now indicate the nearby Barkly West as "Barkley West" - such that many locals take it to be correct (English) version (in Afrikaans, Barkly-Wes). Word-processor spell-checkers do not like "Barkly" and suggest "Barkley" instead, which may well be the reason for the shift. Blarcrean (talk) 10:43, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
