This article is written in British English, which has its own spelling conventions (colour, travelled, centre, defence, artefact, analyse) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other varieties of English. According to the relevant style guide, this should not be changed without broad consensus.
Somebody who has the referenced book should check that the quote attributed to Cottenham LC ("I think that principle has been repeatedly acted upon...") is in fact his. I am fairly sure that it should actually be attributed to Lord Langdale MR (whose decision Cottenham LC went on to affirm. It is possible, I suppose, that the book is incorrect.
