Fly II (limted release) (2000)

I'm pretty sure it was called Fly (special edition). I held it in my arms for 5 minutes before I decided not to buy it. Discography

OK, we need to stop arguing over the discography. I was the one who added the comment. My reasoning for it is twofold:

  • We need some sort of discography on the page. It is an established convention. For example, the article for Mariah Carey (a FA) has a brief discography with her major works. I'm on the fence about including cast albums, but definitely her main studio recordings need to be there, in my opinion.
  • We don't need every single album she ever recorded here. That would be too long of a list.

So I restored the original version of the discography, which existed without complaint for a good deal of time and passed peer review and Good Article voting. If anyone has any concerns, please feel free to bring them up. Crystallina 02:11, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

    • I see the discussion is still going on. Here are two relevant pages: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Music/MUSTARD/Discography and Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(lists_of_works)#Discographies - one from WikiProject Music and one from Manual of Style. Both agree that musicians' pages should indeed have a discography section. However, WikiProject Music standards suggests that they should not have a complete discography if doing so would not fit the system - i.e. if it would become cumbersome. I have a couple goals for this article, and the first step is Good Article. It needs more information and I believe I have nearly exhausted the Internet, or at least the easier-to-find Internet sources. A to-do list:

  • Get information from the three DVDs she released: One Night In Eden (includes interview), La Luna (information, their text biography; Siew May has not finished the bio on the official site yet), and Harem: A Desert Fantasy (information, mainly.)
  • Somehow find more information on her vocal profile. To the level of Mariah Carey, perhaps.
  • There's a decent length interview of her in Hello Magazine; unfortunately, I was unable to obtain it. If anyone has this it would be great.

Ave Maria

Sarah Brightman sang Ave Maria on her 2006 Classics album and the music video for that song, which featured her in suggestive poses wearing close to nothing (with glitter obscuring her private parts) drew some offense, disdain and controversy, especially since Ave Maria has its roots in religion and Roman Catholics may have been offended. I thought I would just throw it out here and leave someone else to see if this is worth mentioning. Of course, the norm is not to include sensitive or controversial material on the subject, but ultimately it's up to one of the regular contributors to this page.Jedd the Jedi (talk) 04:31, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Best selling soprano?

The article says she has sold 26 million albums, making her the best selling soprano of all time. I think Nana Mouskouri has sold more than 10 times that many recordings (something like 350 million. Well, 50 million is still a long way from Nana's over 300 million. I'm not trying to say that one is better than the other, but the fact is that Nana just retired in her 70's after a very long career, and she sold over 300 millions albums in that time span. Maybe eventually Sarah will reach the same number of albums sold. Also I'm wondering why you think Nana is not a soprano. Perhaps Nana is actually a soprano, but I have found no references anywhere to her voice type at all. If you search for world's biggest selling soprano, you can find sources indicating the same person. I have included one in the references. Wikipedia's policy is that all it's information is referable, which makes the statement acceptable. I think we cant remove that title, Sarah was dubbed as the best selling soprano and everyone around the world knows it, she is much big than Nana (original Phantom of the Opera cast, 2 olympics performances, millionarie selling albums, giant world tours, lots of charity concerts). Please can we have this article extended as it is in real need of updae and expansion. It needs to reflect Sarah's position as possibly the biggest selling female star in Europe. It also needs to reflect Sarah's albums better.

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Sarah Brightman's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Hello 'Thedarkocean'. Sarah's official website had published altered information since it's creation in 2003. It's not Sarah's fault, but there are other people that manage the site and not always what you'll find there will be totally true. I already knew about the Argentinean sales, she is way more succesful as everyone thought there. Don't do blind eyes and deaf ears to Brightman's website. Certification numbers are, if not wrong, misunderstood. In some countries, they count Phantom' sales, and in other, they just dont. The ONLY HIGH reliable sources for Gold&Platinum awards are the music agencies for each country: Ej- U.S. RIAA; Canada CRIA; Mexico AMPROFON; Taiwan GOLD TYPHOON; Argentina CAPIF, etc. The problem is that not all of the music development agencies can offer a certifications database as others do. Genres

I have just added Symphonic Metal to her list of genres because of the recent prominence of Fleurs du Mal and similar which have led to inevitable comparisons with Sharon den Adel, however, I recognise that this represents a very small part of her career. That got me thinking that the genre list is too short, listing Symphonic Metal as one of just 3 genres implies it's 1/3 of her work which it isn't. Quite honestly she is an unique artist and can't be conveniently dropped into any genre 'box'. Her albums from the early 00s had a definite new age feel to them but I wouldn't describe it as new age music in the conventional sense. Not sure what I'm expecting to happen here really, maybe nothing, but I do feel that listing her genres as "Classical crossover and operatic pop" is not doing justice to her flexibility and breadth as an artist.Eggybacon (talk) 09:36, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't think she ever reaches "symphonic metal" - "symphonic rock" seems much closer to what you're talking about, as that is how Within Temptation (S. Den Adel) is classified. I don't really agree with that, Within Temptation is often described as a 'symphonic metal' band, as are other bands with soprano lead singers such as Epica, who have produced a lot of music which doesn't bear much resemblence to 'heavy metal'. However I agree that classifying this type of music is difficult and I don't think we should spend too much time worrying about terminology. 'Symphonic rock' seems to get the message across. I agree about both Within Temptation (except their first album) and Sarah Brightman: Symphonic rock at best. (Is there even any other Sarah Brightman song with "heavy" rock influences other than Fleurs du Mal? Even there, I found the guitars very subdued and not at all as obvious as I had expected from the "gothic metal" remark.) But the claim that "Epica [...] have produced a lot of music which doesn't bear much [resemblance] to 'heavy metal'" strikes me as quite uninformed about both Epica and heavy metal. In fact, Epica are one of the heaviest and most 'metal' sounding bands of this type, incorporating extensive passages with thrash, (melodic) death, even occasionally black metal sounding riffs (lately also solos) and vocals in addition to prog and power metal influences; but the heavily employed symphonic aspect mitigates that aspect of their music. This eclectic mix of various extreme and melodic elements is best heard on their two most recent albums. However, it is true that "trve" metalheads often seem not to pay attention to the whole range of influences at display in their music. The personal life section is a bit convoluted. It says that she married Andrew Lloyd-Webber in 1984 but not when they divorced. Technically it only implies the fact that they divorced. Yes, I heard her talk about this (I think it was on PM_(Radio_4) on Radio Four on October 10 2012 - she said that she is going to be the first professional singer to have performed in space. To my knowledge, and I've heard almost everything Sarah has recorded, her highest note was in PotO. The highest note in How Can Heaven Love Me was a D above high C, not an F.

I saw the article said she can only hit E above high C, and I'm absolutely positive that's a mistake. She's at least an octave above that -- that would be E above C above high C. If it is an E; I thought the original key of "Think of Me" had her going up to F#.

High C is defined here as the C two octaves above Middle C; the E above this is the Phantom of the Opera note. Think of Me is sung in two different keys that I have heard; one has a B flat as the highest note, one has high C as the highest note. Crystallina 04:26, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

The "scream" note in Phantom is an E natural. The note at the end of the run in Think of me (in the recorded key) is a B flat.

There seems to be some confusion with Sarah's vocal range: one source says that it is E natural above high C [7] and the other says that she can reach F above soprano C.[8] Does anyone have a third source that might confirm one of these.Copana2002 (talk) 23:50, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

What is her voice type exactly? There is another issue with Ms. Brightman's vocal range. Though the statement that Ms. Brightman "has a five-octave vocal range" cites the source of a "Tour Profile" (I assume this is like an artist bio in a program), the logistics makes this a virtual impossibility. The article states, as noted in the above comments, that Ms. Brightman sings up to F6 (F above high-C or two octaves and a fourth above middle-C), this would then require that she sing down to the lowest F on the piano [F1 - a full octave below a low bass's F (F2)] in order to have a "5-octave range" - highly unlikely. Just as impossible, to have a 4-octave range, she would have to sing down to the low bass F (bottom of the bass staff) - quite doubtful. A more rational probability is a 3-octave range, singing down to the low alto F, a fifth below middle-C; most female pop singers can produce at least a soft version of this note. Some confusion can come from mistaking the ability to sing a certain number of octaves of a note, e.g. four(4) Fs - F3, F4, F5, and F6, as denoting the vocal "range" of 4 octaves, but this is wrong. A vocal range is the SPAN of octaves Encompassed by the voice, so four Fs Spans only 3 octaves (which is plenty impressive on its own, in my opinion as a professional opera singer and voice teacher). In this case, the author cannot be blamed for quoting misinformation given in a promotional source, but it might be a better practice to vet information from a certain discipline unfamiliar to the author with authorities in that discipline. Had the author talked to a classically trained singer, the improbablity of the stated vocal range would have been immediately recognized. Now that she forfitted her trip in the middle of her training, I do not have enough experience with Wikipedia to know what is appropriate in those circomstances. Should all reference to a space trip be suppressed? I don't recommend this because her mere interest for spaceflight participation, her training so far and the collaboration she elicited in various organization towards her prospective mission are all worth being noted!
