The US Navy was allowed to build a new office building to replace the Italian Navy Structures that the US was allowed to use. The New building could not and does not contain more volume than the structures it replaced. The office did not extend. Further, the new construction, complete in April 2007, is on the Same Italian Navy easement that the US Navy has been granted access since 1972. The archipelago that includes Santo Stefano was made a national park in 1996.

Clarification: The Emory S. Land is the only US Navy ship at the island of Santo Stefano. It is the first and only ship that will be leaving.
