Article improvement

Most high schools have an infobox. Can anyone get an image of the Samo Hi seal or the Viking logo? Picture of campus? What's the enrollment? -Will Beback 09:57, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

the AV club and the Film Festival

hi, i am a current student at samo, and i'd like to add an article on the AV club, Running with Speakers. i noticed that other student organizations dont have their own sections, so i can see that it might be unfair to groups like MEChA, BSU, and the Student Body Leadership, but Running with Speakers gets very little credit for what they do. an AV kid might leave school from 6 to 9 on an averege day, working on everything from getting a teacher a light bulb for his or her overhead projector to setting up a profesional sound system for a pep rally. we support every school activity that has to do with either video or sound. the AV club is also linked to the digital video and news video classes. the same teacher that is the advisor for th AV club teachers these classes and we have produced award winning work (i can actually give you a link to some of our work on youtube.com, but i'd have to find it). our film festival brings in student films from all over LA county and is widley respected.

i hope wikipedia finds it apropriate to write a section on Running with Speakers.

It'd be fine to have a section on clubs. I'll set up the header for you and you can fill it in. Keep it down to a couple of sentences written in an encyclopedic tone. It'd be swell to get a list of all clubs, if one is available. -Will Beback 01:42, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

XC ten year league winning streak

Okay, so I ran for Samo XC and graduated in 2002, I'm pretty sure we didn't win league any of the four years I was there which would make it pretty touch by most standards to have a 10 year league winning streak. I've kept in touch a little and I'm a big fan, I also believe we got dropped to a lower league, so it's possible that there is a 6 year streak going, but I don't see how 10 years is possible. I have changed the importance rating from High to Mid, as the Santa Monica article better meets the Mid criteria of "Adds further depth, but not vital to encyclopedia", than the High criteria "Very much needed, even vital". -- Lissoy 20:52, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Unreferenced statements

The article contains many unreferenced statements, some of which contradict information available elsewhere online (such as the history section, which is vastly different from the Samohi Alumni website history pages). I have left the material in place, but added tags marking the need for sources. Other areas needing sources include the competition results for musical groups. Santa Monica Band Parents Association

A recent edit added two long paragraphs about the Santa Monica Band Parents Association.[1] I have two concerns about this material. First, it may be excessively long given the overall importance of the issue to the article as a whole. Second, there are no sources. Are any sources available for this material? Shame-tagging

As I noted in my edit summary, it is the norm for lists of this sort not to have refs for every single entry.

Look for example at List of people from California.

And List of California Institute of Technology people.

I went through this list, and deleted some non-appropriate entries. And then deleted the tag. Explaining why.

You then shame-tagged the list. Why? Are you going to shame-tag every single list on Wikipedia? Starting with the 300 lists of people by city in the US?

In addition, as you I am sure are aware, there are no refs in categories. Yet all these same names are set forth in the categories that also represent the same fact -- person of city X. Are you going to now start deleting those category references, because categories do not attract refs? If not, where is the logic?

The same with schools. Such as these 400 lists of people of school x.

As you can see, most don't have refs within the list. How is that helpful?

See WP:ALUMNI: "All alumni information must be referenced". Wikipedia is always a work in progress, and the fact that some other article may violate a policy or guideline is not a justification to violate it in this one too. Above, WhisperToMe already pointed out the same problem with this list some years ago. It's time to start reducing it to the referenced entries. Regards, HaeB (talk) 08:57, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

But that is wrong. How do we know that? There are a couple of reasons.

We could have a longer discussion about the insidious nature of selective enforcement -- if most such lists do not have refs for each line, and HaeB selectively picks the school he dislikes and seeks to enforce such a rule selectively by deletion, that would be a bad thing. Yick Wo v. Hopkins. That sort of thing. Editors have spoken out against selective enforcement, including some senior ones like User:Thatcher and User:Jehochman and User:Edison and User:Roger Davies.

But we don't even have to go there. Because you aren't just selectively applying a rule. You are selectively quoting the rule.

Leaving out the most important part -- for these purposes. The part that indicates that it is incorrect to assert, as the tag you applied does, that "this section needs additional citations for verification." The truth is, the section itself does not need any such citations for verification. It is sufficient that the bio article pointed to does (as is the case here) have the necessary support for the alumni connection (and notability). As long as the target article has that, everything is fine.

What did you selectively leave out the part of WP:ALUMNI that says: "When alumni have their own articles in mainspace, it is not necessary for their notability to be referenced, as long as it is done in the biographical articles." How could you fail to admit that the rule says that? It is a relevant as can be. And shows the assertion of the tag to be incorrect.

Now, I agree with you that if a name lacks the refs in both this article and in the target article to show that the person attended the school and is notable, their name is subject to deletion. But that's not what you tag says.

But there are names on this list that lack footnotes here. But have them in the target article. Look for example at Robert Downey, Jr.. Or Emilio Estevez. Or Sean Penn. They have footnotes in the target articles, so your tagging this article to say they need footnotes here is incorrect.

WP:OTHERSTUFF. Enforcement has to start somewhere, but it has to be sensible enforcement. This isn't. I removed the tag because there is no pressing danger that a reader might swallow fake info in this section. Warnings should be used sparingly when there is a pressing need.
