Could be libelous. 173.210.125.42 (talk) 17:17, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- I second this, at the very least, this needs to be a cite of someone saying this, not what appears to be the opinion of Wikipedia, as presented. 76.186.226.10 (talk) 03:32, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Dropping the F-Bomb at meeting with Tribune staff
editNeed to add in the incident this week where he tells a reporter asking him about policies "f*** you" which has since shown up on YouTube and seems a direct contradiction of his own handbook policy encouraging employees to challenge management. 24.24.211.239 (talk) 02:42, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- Here's an interesting editorial cartoon from the Seattle PI on that subject.
The following is not slander
editThe passage that the IP editor keeps removing claiming it is slander is the following:
- According to the New York-based Jewish daily, The Forward, the purchase of the Times has stirred debate over how Zell, who has a reputation for being a "committed Zionist", would influence the paper's coverage of Israel.[1] One former Los Angeles Times political reporter, Ken Reich, assumes the paper's editorial policies will be shaped to "some degree." Reich said, "If he cares about the State of Israel, he won’t want his newspaper to be out there chipping away at Israeli interests."[1]
I can not see how the above is slander as it accurately reports on a concern that some had in the media and in the broader community with regards to his purchase of the LA Times. The references are high quality (The Forward and the former political reporter for LA Times) and the passage above does not state conclusively that changes have occurred merely that some felt that there would be changes. Also, even if there were changes to the LA Times' coverage of Israel-related topics, this would not be illegal or unethical -- thus it is not slander to mention the possibility. Newspapers are allowed to cover world events and politics any way they see fit. They are not regulated by any laws that require equal coverage or multiple viewpoints -- for a case in point, see Fox News. --John Bahrain (talk) 05:14, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
While it might not meet the legal requirements of slander, it is still baseless speculation. Even "high quality" sources can be biased, and being pro-Israel, or insufficiently anti-Israel, is definitely a negative in certain quarters such as the Forward and the LA Times editor in question. Hypocritically, especially in light of their baseless accusation against Zell, is the fact that the Forward itself ousted a conservative editor at the behest of the Forward Foundation, a left non-profit [1].
I hardly think Wiki should allow anything so long as its not provably slanderous. For example, if a Wikipedia entry stated that sources speculated that Bob Smith was likely to start lying about his age, weight, and appearance in online dating without providing any evidence to support it, Bob Smith would be rightfully angry.
The paragraph in question is not only unfair to Zell, it's unfair to readers seeking honest, truthful, fact based information which is what Wikipedia is supposed to be providing.
76.93.17.202 (talk) 07:53, 28 July 2008 (UTC) 28 July 2008
And, as an additional note, I'd point out that Zell has been in charge of the LA Times for a number of months already, and all the changes he's made have been aimed at increasing profitability, not imposing the sort of editorial changes the paragraph speculated about. 76.93.17.202 (talk) 08:02, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

JD in 1966?
editIt seems highly unlikely that he earned a JD in 1966 because LLBs were the norm until 1970, and if you ask Zell he almost certainly got a LLB which was later changed to a JD. Even if there are footnotes to support the JD in 1966, that probably means that source also failed to understand that, until 1970, almost all American law schools awarded LLBs. The sun will still rise, of course, if this is not corrected. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.49.27.38 (talk) 13:21, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Political Contributions Section Remove?
editI am not sure why the political contributions section is there. It seems to say, well, nothing. $100,000 in 13 years is not a lot, barely a fraction of one US Rep. campaign, especially for someone who donates tens of millions. Is this relevant to Sam Zell? In what way? Sure, some may argue that donations by the rich are always relevant. I don't see how that is so. Some wealthy people are politically active and it is a part of their public persona (see Soros, Bono) but Zell seems not to be. His political contributions are meaningless. This section adds nothing to his bio. It only seems to raise unjustifiably the visibility of and therefore the importance of political contributions. A few other billionaire articles that I checked didn't talk about political donations. I'll delete it. If someone disagrees they can explain here and add it back in. --Bruce Hall (talk) 01:29, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Removed Anti-Semitic "Ethnicity: Jewish" from heading box
editThere's an obvious anti-Semitic implication in the inclusion of "Ethnicity -- Jewish" in the heading box, as if to say, Sam Zell, Jew. This is a common ploy of anti-Semites on Wikipedia. You don't see "Louis Farrakhan -- Ethnicity: African American" or "Jack Welch -- Ethnicity: Caucasian," etc. The Jewish background in the article body is relevant to explain parent's emigration from Poland in 1939. That's sufficient. Otherwise, it's irrelevant. J M Rice (talk) 15:45, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
Lead contains more puff than pudding
editIn addition, Zell maintains substantial interests in, and is the Chairman of, several public companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange, including: Equity Residential (EQR), the largest apartment real estate investment trust (or REIT) in the U.S.; Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS), a REIT that owns and operates manufactured home and resort communities; Equity Commonwealth (EQC) an office REIT; Covanta Holding Corp. (CVA), an international owner/operator of energy-from-waste and power generation facilities; and Anixter (AXE), a global provider of communications, security, and wire and cable products.
There's nary a mention of his former activities in the media sector.
A lead is supposed to summarize the article. Unlike quarterly reports, past performance also matters. — MaxEnt 18:51, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

This article may have been created or edited in return for undisclosed payments
edithello Edwardx and John from Idegon, the above banner says that the article may "may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies." i'm here to try to do the cleanup. i looked at the View history and on the long list it shows that EGITH2019! was accused of "undisclosed paid" on 21 june. it also shows that Edwardx kept reverting EGITH2019!. so my question is, is there anything left to cleanup, or did Edwardx already handle this? thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CocoTwinkletoe (talk • contribs) 00:54, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
hello! are there any moderators on this chat page? thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CocoTwinkletoe (talk • contribs) 01:28, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, CocoTwinkletoe. AS you have declared that you are being paid yourself to edit this very article, you are not exactly the person to clean up after a different paid editor. You are free to go through the article and check the sources. If you find anything that you think is not correct, or is unsupported by proper sources, or where there is relevant information not present, please create a section her eon the talk page, and post your suggested changes or the problems you have found (better if you suggest specific changes) along with one or more citations to reliable sources that support your suggestion. Then add {{Request edit}} to ask another editor to review your suggestions, and implement them if they seem appropriate. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 18:45, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
- CocoTwinkletoe, Wikipedia doesn't have "moderators". But it has administrators, often known as "admins", which is pretty much the same. DESiegel is an admin. Maproom (talk) 23:07, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
