The Image I put in is from Wikimedia Commons so I have removed that notice.Gladiator-Citizen (talk) 06:19, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

This image is almost certainly a copyright violation and the justification on the pics page is definitely incorrect. I suspect there may be issues with other images on this page. Lumberjack Steve 01:51, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's clearly not a sports poster, which is how it was tagged. I've marked it as having no licence information, and arranged for it's deletion. -- Longhair 05:51, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

This does not conform with biographies of living people. It is far too lenient. There is not sufficient mention of the street talk segment in which the presenter ridicules and demeans the intellectually disables for laughs. This segmant has significant cultural resonance, and is now the dominant discourse in intellectual disability rights in australia. citation needed.202.137.86.29 13:05, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Media career= edit

This section is now getting out of control. The controversial antics are being increased regularly and are not really that notable. I would like to see this restrained to only include items which reach wider media attention such as the black face incident or the Shane Crawford dacking. Lumberjack Steve 10:21, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The media career section may have been out of control in 2006, now however, since Sam has lost the plot, his antics attract almost daily sympathy for him.

general points edit

first of all, sam newman is a widely known and talked about australian media celebrity. if anything, his media 'stunts' are lacking. i can think of no other retired AFL footballer who garners so much attention for his exploits. just recently he had botox performed by a doctor on himself on the AFL Footy Show, surely this is wiki-worthy. anyway, i'm not sure about the list of women he has supposedly been involved with. i mean, imogen bailey, paris hilton, give me a break. i cant be bothered, and which in itself is naughty, to check the links, but i will go off on a limb to say that it is illegitimate speculation.

Sam's footy career, for a life member of the GFC, is lacking.

Other than that, general grammatical errors and not-so-perfect wordings are all that is lacking. cheers.Lucastheory 06:33, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sam Newman's height and weight edit

Is he really only 189cm and does he really weigh as much as 94kg?

I'm not from an AFL state, NSW, but he always looked quite tall and fairly skinny to me? like 6'3" atleast and I'm even more surprised about the weight of 94kg ... he has skinny legs and not a big body, how could he weigh that much?

of all the crappy biographies.... edit

on wiki, this is the crappiest I have read yet. If wiki wants to be taken seriously, there has to be more effort put into articles than this. Please try a bit harder, the credibility of this enterprise is on the line. Newman played 300 games of football and has had a media career for over 25 years, and surely has a family life, has given interviews etc. Do some research!!

Fair use rationale for Image:Newman Age.jpg edit

Image:Newman Age.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Move out controversy edit

I propose to move the 'controversy' section of this biography into its own article. It's a bit unwieldy to have it in a biography. Plus, if anyone thinks it's non-notable they can AfD it.

I'm pretty sure the text about Sam Newman controversies is notable, since it has repeatedly been front-page news. - Richard Cavell (talk) 00:04, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I disagree. It belongs in his article. But you couldn't create a redirect to that section of the article if you wanted to. --Rulesfan (talk) 01:22, 7 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Disagree - this only makes sense if the main article is overly long. It isn't. It's now much more "unwieldy" to have the controversies in a separate article. Murtoa (talk) 23:48, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I also disagreed, and have moved the small amount of material back into this page (while redirecting the other one here) Jwoodger (talk) 00:48, 17 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

He is a complete misogynist - as the $200K defamation payout proved. And, never an apology from him. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.210.107.47 (talk) 04:17, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Cancer of the Balls edit

Didn't he have cancer of the nuts?

What's happened? He's still alive, I guess. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.210.107.47 (talk) 04:11, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Minor fact check edit

I have undone revision 311649881 by 123.2.150.249, which appears to be subtle vandalism. (See their other edits, which are less subtle.) But someone may wish to check whether 1975 is the correct year for Mr. Newman's "Best and Fairest" (whatever that is). Open4D (talk) 18:46, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

1975 is the right year (Carji Greeves Medal). Well spotted mate. Jevansen (talk) 23:53, 22 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Motor Racing edit

Is he still doing this?

What a joke how seriously he takes himself as a driver. Most P platers could throw a car around a track better than him! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.210.107.47 (talk) 04:14, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Membership of Western Bulldogs edit

Recently I added (with a reference) the information that he's been a member of the Western Bulldogs for seven years. I believe this information is relevant, given his long association with Geelong, the fact that he's living in the western suburbs, the potential for conflict of interest when commenting on the Bulldogs, and the fact that he made a deal of it while discussing Jason Akermanis. It was deleted as non-notable. Do you think it should be in the article? - Richard Cavell (talk) 13:53, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

In my WP:OR opinion, you often hear about football media buying memberships for clubs other than their own. Some, including Sam, are AFL life members, so I'm guessing that they could use that, or their media credentials, to get into any AFL game they want to. They basically seem to do it, especially for the "struggling" Melb clubs, as a donation to those clubs.
Considering that his entire 300 game football career is given one paragraph in the article, I think WP:UNDUE could apply to virtually the whole article, but having memberships of another club is irrelevant. He did it in the Aker case to try to show that he wasn't trying to destroy the Dogs or anything similar. The-Pope (talk) 16:03, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Agree with The-Pope – he's been a Melbourne member for quite a few years as well. Jenks24 (talk) 03:13, 5 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Being a social member of a club is not really of importance. May as well add which video shops he has memberships with, or if he's an RACV member. If the membership leads to an active role in any of those organisations it becomes notable. But if all it is is just a plastic card in his wallet then it's trivia surely? --Falcadore (talk) 03:36, 5 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sam edit

Why "Sam"?

NB. I found it on Google; but why isn’t it here? (Some character on the Jackie Gleeson Show, that he liked to impersonate, at school.) Not in History, either.

MBG02 (talk) 16:46, 15 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

correction edit

The correct spelling is "Geordan" - verified with the family.

For anyone confused, the above is a comment about the name of one of Sam's children, which I have removed anyway in accordance with our policy that we don't publish the names of non-notable children. HiLo48 (talk) 03:34, 22 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sam Newman edit

I have restored the names of the children. There are various claimants to a relationship with Sam Newman who, in Australia, is a famous personality. Correct information is important for the media and the general public and should be correct in Wikipedia.

The Image I put in is from Wikimedia Commons so I have removed that notice.Gladiator-Citizen (talk) 06:19, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Please see WP:BLPNAME for the reason why the children's names should not be there. And note that new entries on Talk pages go at the bottom of the page. HiLo48 (talk) 09:21, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes. Note also per that policy that it may be the right thing to remove more names (I haven't checked the sources). Just because we can include names of decently sourced wives and step-children it doesn't mean we should, it's up to editorial discretion/consensus. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:50, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Actually [1]. Feel free to restore with reliable secondary sources. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:54, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
The image doesn't look like a BLP-image that would normally be allowed on WP (too "studio"), but that doesn't necessarily mean anything, the copyright-license may very well be in order. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:13, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Protection edit

Kosack, I don't know if you're keeping an eye, but consider reinstating. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:26, 21 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gråbergs Gråa Sång, I'll try and keep an eye on this. A little early to go straight back in perhaps, we'll see how we go for now. Thanks. Kosack (talk) 11:20, 21 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
