I've now moved the page accordingly. Old versions of this article claim that "Dolly Gray" was a nickname for this guy, but you (Dewelar) apparently concluded that that is false. If so, we should probably move the article about Dolly Gray (left-handed pitcher) to Dolly Gray, possibly with a hatnote to Sam Gray. Ucucha (talk) 23:10, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- Well, obviously I can't say with certainty that he wasn't known as Dolly, but I found nothing in any of the listed sources that supported the use of any nickname for this player other than "Sad Sam", so I removed it. Given that, I would agree with your assessment of what should be done with the Dolly Gray page. -Dewelar (talk) 01:17, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
- Do you have this book? It may say something about either Gray, though Google doesn't give me a good enough view to be sure. This book says that Samuel David was also known as Dolly Gray according to the snippet I see in the search. There also seems to have been a popular song of the Boer War called Goodbye Dolly Gray. - If I'm reading those excerpts correctly, it would seem that Sam's nickname "Dolly" was somehow directly influenced by the fact that the earlier pitcher, William, was also nicknamed Dolly. That was quite common during that era, and thus was likely more an invention of sportswriters rather than an organic nickname. So, if that's the case, it would appear that "Goodbye, Dolly Gray" may have been the inspiration for both nicknames, as the other Dolly's page has a citation for that being the source for his. -Dewelar (talk) 14:00, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
