Talk:Sam Giancana

We would need an image. Sam Giancana has probably been photographed many times by US federal agencies, it should be possible to get uncopyrighted ones. David.Monniaux 14:31, 20 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

"Born Momo Salvatore Guingano (Americanised to Giancana} in Little Italy, Chicago. Sam Giancana was arrested more than 70 times in his life. However, he was imprisoned only twice. Giancana's nickname "Momo" was derived from the slang term "Mooney" (which meant "crazy") as Giancana had long had a reputation for unstable and unpredictably violent behavior."

Was he born with the name "Momo" or was it his nickname? 68.166.69.57 07:19, 10 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

It seems pretty obvious to me, that he wasn't given the name "Momo" at birth as it is explained later to be his nickname. I'm changing "Born Momo Salvatore Guingano (Americanised to Giancana} in Little Italy" to "Born Salvatore Guingano (Americanised to Giancana} in Little Italy" 130.226.173.22 12:40, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is it just me or does this article imply that Giancana killed Kennedy...someone who is better at this needs to bring this to proveable factual standards. 72.16.85.36 04:40, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I fixed that, by removing it with other paras that seem to be more interested in burnishing the Kennedys' reputation and painting Nixon as an evil, Palpatine-like genius even when he was in the political wilderness (believe me, there's enough genuine skeletons in his closet out there without pinning stuff that happened on Kennedy's watch on him...) Why not reference this article by Dan Fulsom? http://crimemagazine.com/03/richardnixon,1014.htm Fulsom has covered the Nixon White House for UPI and has written about Nixon for The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, Esquire, Los Angeles, and Regardie's. He claims that Giancana told relatives that he was in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963 to supervise the assassination of President Kennedy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.214.69.12 (talk) 19:33, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Samgiancana.jpg edit

Image:Samgiancana.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Use of 'The Patch' to refer to Little Italy edit

I grew up thinking that 'The Patch' referred to a part of West Town on the border with the Ukrainian Village and Humboldt Park. Sometimes called Smith Park (only by realtors), its borders are Western on the east, Grand to the south, California to the west and Chicago to the north. It was also an Italian/Sicilian neighborhood and many of the descendants of the original settlers still refer to it as 'The Patch' (in fact, I think almost all residents do). Little Italy, to my knowledge, has always been just 'Little Italy'. Any thoughts removing 'The Patch' reference when referring to Little Italy? For additional reference, look at both the Little Italy and West Town entries on Wiki.--Sasouthcott (talk) 15:21, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

"Momo" edit

The article, at one time, said: "born Momo Salvatore Giancana". This was later changed, and it was noted that the name "Momo" was derived from the nickname "Mooney". I don't know about this, but "Momo" is a common nickname for the Italian given name "Cosimo". Is it possible that he was born "Cosimo Salvatore Giancana"? Updated based on the Chicago Bureau of Vital Statistics. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 23:55, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Two birth names for Sam Giancana are known: Gilormo Giangana and Momo Salvatore Giancana, as well as two birth dates: May 24, 1908 and June 15, 1908. Below I have transcribed the sources on the birth of Giancana, from the FBI documents on Giancana.

Transcript

— Birth Records Section, Bureau of Vital Statistics 130 North Wells, Chicago, made available to SA – on April 17, 1958, Birth Certificate Number 5915 – pointed out this is the original certificate filed on June 30, 1908. This certificate recorded the birth of GILORMO GIANGANA, a white male child, the second child of his mother on May 24, 1908, at Chicago, Illinois. The mother is shown as ANTONIA DISIMONNA (partially illegible - surname could be spelled differently), father shown as ANTONINO GIANGANA, laborer, both residing at 223 Ebeten, Chicago. This birth was reported by ALESSANTRINA VITALE, midwife, 49 Schlot Street.

— Advised SA — on April 28, 1958, that Certificate Number 1191 recorded on page 56, volume 6, of the Birth Register, maintained by the Church, reflects that MOMO SALVATORE GIANCANA was born on June 15, 1908, at Chicago to ANTONIA DISIMONE and ANTONIO GIANCANA. — both the spelling "GIANCANA" and "GIANGANA" appear on the certificate and the latter was the originally recorded, but subsequently changed to the correct spelling of "GIANCANA". — the only date of birth on the certificate is June 15, 1908, and the name "GILORMO" does not appear anywhere on the record.

— the name "MOMO" as well the name "GILORMO" are very rare Italian names and the name "MOMO" is generally considered a nickname. — the Italian name "SALVATORE" is usually translated into the Americanized version of "SAM". — the aforementioned records were originally recorded at the time of Baptism on December 15, 1908, and do not appear to have been amend or altered since that date.

— advised that ANTHONY V. CHAMPAGNE, [...] attorney for GIANCANA, stated on July 9, 1957, that GIANCANA filed "Delayed Series" Birth Certificate Number 2965 at the Bureau of Vital Statistics in 1956. This certificate reflected the following: MOMO SALVATORE GIANCANA, known as SAMUEL M. GIANCANA, born June 15, 1908, at Chicago, son of ANTONIO GIANCANA, born Castelvetrano, Province of Trapani, Italy, and ANTONIA DESIMMONA, also born Castelvetrano. Attached to the certificate was the affidavit of GIANCANA that the above statements were true to the best of his knowledge. It was notarized by ANTHONY V. CHAMPAGNE on June 29, 1956.

Dates of Birth

  • June 15, 1908, (as contained on birth certificate at Holy Guardian Angel Church, Chicago, and delayed birth certificate filed by subject and his attorney at the Bureau of Vital Statistics at Chicago in 1956).
  • May 24, 1908, (as contained on birth certificate No. 5915 filed with the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Chicago, on June 30, 1908, by the midwife of GIANCANA). Dipascz (talk) 13:51, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Dipascz: Thanks for that source. The parts about his birth records begin on page 90 where you have transcribed. The FBI documents also refer to him as "Samuel M. Giancana" when stating his full name. The first birth record states "Gilormo" and "May 24, 1908" and so I feel comfortable going with those, but again having a note for his name to say "Momo Salvatore Giancana". I added the other note. Let me know if that's alright. Also, I have seen sources say his father remarried - but did his father have any children with her or Sam only had stepsiblings. I removed the part about step/half siblings based on unsourced info. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 14:05, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Vaselineeeeeeee:Thanks for your edit to the page. The source of the name "Samuel M. Giancana" comes from the FBI documents. After reading Double Cross, I added the information about his family and his full name, "Samuel Mooney Giancana", cited by his brother Chuck. I think he legally changed his name to "Samuel Mooney Giancana", after his common nickname, "Mooney", and the name "Samuel", from "Salvatore"; not excluding the name "Momo Salvatore Giancana". As for the date of birth, the book Double Cross also states that Giancana celebrated his birthday on June 15, but was born on May 24, 1908, as Momo Salvatore Giancana, to Antonia and Antonino Giangana (changed to Antonio Giancana), and called by his father "Mo", without mentioning the name "Gilormo". The information about his family is present in the book, with photos, and his relatives are also mentioned in the FBI documents, on pages 92, 93, 187 to 188.Dipascz (talk) 15:01, 9 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
