Love Affair edit

A love affair with greta Garbo and especially mercedes de acosta (in her letters and diary salka viertel shows from the beginning an antipathy envers De Acosta), is not very probable. Salka Viertel had most of the time heterosexual affairs with Gottfried Reinhardt (son of Max Reinhardt) and Oliver Garret (screenplay wrtiter). This alleged love affair is mostly based on the book "the girls. sappho in hollywod" by diana mclellan, wich isn't based on serious research. There are many factual errors ( impossible dates, facts and persons mixed up). --Euli 08:51, 23 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree with the above. Further, the salient facts of Salka Viertel's biography are missing from this discussion: She sponsored many European (especially German refugee artists and intellectuals in Hollywood before and during WWII, among them Thomas Mann, his brother Klaus, the novelist Lion Feuchtwanger, the composer Hans Eisler, artist Lyonel Feininger, and many others. She held gatherings for the European communitythat have been variously described as salons or tea parties, where the above named and many other luminaries met to read, perform, and discuss their work and the events of the times. Why do I even care to write down a scietnific criticism If the old and incorrect version is just resurrected. While Mercedes de Acosta was definitley homosexual and even Greta Garbo had quite certainly an affair with de Acosta, there is - after reviewing the letters and diaries of Salka Viertel - not the smallest indication of her homosexuality but on the contrary but countless proves of her heterosexuality. This is not ment as ajudgemental statement but to stay true to the facts. And I'm sorry to say but http://www.glbtq.com/arts/film_actors_lesbian.html is not a scientific reference.

For anyone interested visit the german version of this page. I'll try to translate it in the next weeks--Euli (talk) 20:43, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm coming to this page six years after Euli's offer, but it would be very useful for someone to revise this page along the lines of the German page. JamesSchmidt 14:19, 23 January 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by JamesSchmidt (talkcontribs)

Quoting the recent biography of Viertel:
Salka herself identified as heterosexual publicly, in her diaries, and in her memoir, and strenuously denied that she and Garbo ever had a sexual relationship. There is not a shred of evidence to prove that they did... [Quoting Barry Paris, who disparaged Viertel] "...none of the many claims that they were 'lovers' offers anything but conjecture to back it up."[1]
The biography goes on to note a variety of reasons to slander Viertel this way, having to do with power rather than with truth.
I have modified the article to take out the two unfounded "Bisexual" categories. Larry Koenigsberg (talk) 00:40, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
