Tourism

Is the Information about the restrictions foreigners are supposedly facing still relevant? There is only one source given for the cited decree, which consists of a more than three year old newspaper report on a seemingly no longer maintained site. I have sifted through a lot of reports from travellers who have visited the island recently, none of which mentions any need for special permits to move about. Inconsistency

The Infobox states that Sakhalin was established on 2nd Jan 1947 but the text in the history section says 2nd Jan 1946! Anybody know which is correct? MWchat (talk) 08:39, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Actually, 20 October 1932. See Постановление ВЦИК от 20.10.1932 "О реорганизации системы административно-территориального деления Дальневосточного края" (in Russian). On January 2, 1947 the Sakhalin Oblast was enlarged to include disbanded South Sakhalin Oblast (per this decree). Also, in 1932-1947 Sakhalin Oblast was a part of Far Eastern Krai (1932—1938) and Khabarovsk Krai (1938—1947), in a matryoshka-style subordination of one Russian federal subject to another (similar to present-day relationship between Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Arkhangelsk Oblast).
