• Oppose - The town council itself uses the name Sagara. See [1] . There is no official spelling in Roman letters in India, there are only varying spellings used by different government staff. Quite often these individuals are not from the same area and spell the name as it would be in their own language rather than locally. Sometimes also, as in this town website, the same website will use more than one spelling. The Kannada name is transliterated Sagara. Imc (talk) 22:34, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

• Support- Kannada name “ಸಾಗರ” translated to English is “Sagar” whereas “Sagara” translates back to Kannada as “ಸಾಗರಾ”, which is used in casual conversations in certain Kannada dialects limited to a few southern districts of the state. People in and around Bangalore have the tendency to use “ra” in place of “r” ( like using ‘rə’ in place of ‘ər’). All websites of town & city councils in Karnataka state are designed and developed by a team of web developers working at NIC Bangalore http://www.kar.nic.in/. Consequently, they have ended up mentioning wrong spellings of towns and cities on official websites of places. It is the individual town councils who have to get the spelling corrected on their websites maintained by NIC, Bangalore. Please have a look at the following Government websites.

The Kannada name "ಸಾಗರ" is translated as sea or lake. I think you mean the word transliteration. It transliterates as 'sāgara' in IAST using the standard Kannada transliteration system, which is written as 'sagara' in ordinary type. Refer to most grammars or online converters such as [6]. You appear to be saying that the local pronunciation written in common English usage is different from the standard transliteration. That is another matter. In the end of course we have to fall back on reliable references and common usage. I really don't think that there is any point assuming that government websites are any more reliable than any others, since few if any Indian government bodies enforce any standard system. • Comment: There is ambiguity in various government websites. Thought their City Municipal Council website uses the "Sagara" spelling in titles, url, it also uses "Sagar" in other places. Shimoga district's webiste uses "Sagar" and the famous Jog falls' website uses "Sagara". §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 03:34, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

• Comment "Sagara" is used by a few people using a particular dialect of Kannada language while "Sagar" is officially used by both the state government and central government since the independence of India. It is a negligence on the part of senior government officials that they did not review the texts used on their websites for uniformity. I did schooling in Sagar town a couple of decades back and would go by "Sagar". Some people having excessive love towards their dialect are trying to promote their dialect as standard form of Kannada and they are in government organizations too. Some of those who got an opportunity to develop government websites have made use of the opportunity by mentioning "Sagara" on those websites. This is not limited to Sagar article on Wikipedia alone. I see lots of such articles belonging to Karnataka on this site that do not use the spelling used by governments. My vote goes for following what the Postal department of India [7] says as that was the first government agency in India to identify places. As somebody rightly said in one of the comments above, let's not have our own spellings on Wiki. When users feel that the Indian Postal department is not using the correct spelling, let them get it rectified through the respective district magistrates and direct the Postal department to use the right spelling. Once the postal department updates its records, let the users reflect that change on Wikipedia. Wikipedia should give the right information to readers. • Oppose - Agree with user IMC. This is an unnecessary churn. There are hundreds of place names in each state of India which are widely (with in the state at least) pronounced they way they are written in the local language. I don't agree with an earlier comment that Sagara with an 'a' at the end is limited to a dialect of Kannada. It is pronounced that way in all dialects of the language. I don't accept the argument that it should be written the way it is pronounced in Hindi or English, the official languages of the union. BTW, for a while the user PuttuHegde assumed Hindi was a "national language". I reminded him that it is not by reverting his edits (which he promptly labeled as vandalism and re-reverted and changed his argument). The official languages of India are not imposed on any state in correspondence and each state in India corresponds with the central government in its own state language. The article Bangalore (capital of Karnataka state) has not been changed to "Bengaluru", the offical name given by the state and accepted by Government of India several years back. This is with good reason. Bangalore is still the most popular name. Similarly, thousands of place names which have an 'a' at the end (reflecting the Kannada language naturalization of a root Sanskrit word) including Sagara, Ramanagara, Banavara, Somanathapura, Shivapura, Ramanathapura, Shivanasamudra and so on can remain written the way they are pronounced in the official local language of the state. This problem is not limited to Kananda place names alone. For example, Telugu place names often tend to have an 'am' at the end: Bhadrachalam, Simhachalam, Arunachalam, Ahobilam, Draksharam, Srisailam. When these place names are written the way they are pronounced in Hindi (official language of India), you would automatically drop the 'am' at the end making it sound funny to the locals who are most likely the ones who will build and main those articles. So I hope you get my drift. We would me messing with thousands of articles and I am sure there will be such differences in every country with an ancient history. Only the name most popular with the general public should be used. This is an endless churn instead of which, time could be well spent in actually improving the article content itself. Jog Falls is not within the municipality of Sagara, Karnataka; however, it is within the Sagara Subdivision. A picture of the falls currently illustrates the Sagara Subdivision article.
