Saanich (language)Saanich (linguistics) … Rationale: Was here before User:Chimerical05 moved it with the comment "It's a particular language." Where there's dispute over whether something is a dialect or a language, the preferred neutral page name seems to be [[X (linguistics)]], e.g. Wu (linguistics), Scanian (linguistics). --Ptcamn 23:48, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose: Saanich is not a linguistics but a language. Thumbelina 17:42, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
John Smith (comics) is not a comic, John Smith (BBC) is not a broadcasting corporation, John Smith (1781-1854) is not a 73-year period, John Smith (New York) is not a city, and Saanich (language) is giving preference to a POV that's not supported by linguists. --Ptcamn 23:16, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Namechange redux edit

See Talk:Lummi Salish#Undiscussed namechange redux. This should have been simply Saanich language as per other "dialects" and also per usual Wiki naming conventions. The title should say what this is, and coule easiliy be interpreted to mean the Salishan tribes of the Saanich area, rather than a language; "Salish" is not a language name, and "Salishan" is the group.Skookum1 (talk) 13:31, 26 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

WSANEC? edit

Is WSANEC the name of the people, then, rather than the language SENCOTEN?Skookum1 (talk) 16:34, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Does Saanich have /u/? edit

The vowels table says no; the example CEPU below the consonants says yes; the orthography section isn't sure (<U> /ǝw u/ -- does this mean [u] is /ǝw/?). 4pq1injbok (talk) 04:48, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Only in about a dozen foreign words. The description should be clearer now. kwami (talk) 08:26, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

The Letter É edit

I have seen the letter É in:

T̵X̲ÉT 'shove' (nonactual) T̵ÉX̲T 'shoving' (actual)
ṮPÉX̲ 'scatter' (nonactual) ṮÉPX̲ 'scattering' (actual)
ȾȽÉQ 'pinch' (nonactual) ȾÉȽQ 'pinching' (actual)

But it does not exist in the actual alphabet.

A Á Ⱥ B C Ć Ȼ D E H
/e/ /ej/ /pʼ/ /k̟/ /t͡ʃ/ /k̟ʷ/ /tʼ/ /ə/ /h/
I Í J K // L Ƚ M
/i/ /ǝj/, /ɑj/ /t͡ʃʼ/ /k̠ʼ/ /k̠ʷʼ/ /k̠/ /k̠ʷ/ /l/, /lʼ/ /ɬ/ /m/, /mʼ/
N O P Q S Ś T Ⱦ

Context edit

It should be stated in the lead that this is a North American language. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.87.4.79 (talk) 12:11, 15 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Rename page to "SENĆOŦEN" edit

The name SENĆOŦEN is used as the primary name of the language by the W̱SÁNEC School Board[1] as well as sources outside the nation such as on the CRD's website[2] and by CBC News.[3] NuclearElevator (talk) 04:48, 29 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

T with Bar edit

This page says that the T - bar makes a sibilant fricative but the page about the T - bar itself says that Saanich T - bar makes a non-sibilant fricative. Muonium777 (talk) 06:38, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
