USS and Navy history are not supported

"USS Robin Doncaster" is extensively used but there in no authoritative support for that usage. The one place I found in a look at references is a sailor's story and even USN sailors can assume all ships involved in any military service are Navy—though they should know the difference between a commissioned ship and one not commissioned in every case. Lloyd's shows the ship as War Shipping Administration for 1942—43 through 1945—46 and Grover in U.S. Army Ships and Watercraft of World War II shows the ship under "Allocated by War Shipping Administration" among the Army troop transports allocated by WSA. In an effort to confirm a brief commissioned status warranting the USS usage confirmed there is no DANFS, and DANFS is reasonably thorough in covering larger commissioned vessels, even if with one or two lines. A search for any version of the ship's name, including SS, using .mil shows only USCG hits on the civilian ship. This is pretty conclusive that the use of "USS Robin Doncaster and all references to the ship being "commissioned" or "in" Navy are erroneous assumptions—even if statements can be found in some references. SS Empire Curlew(1940) was a 7,101 GRT Type C2-S cargo ship which was built by Bethlehem Steel Co, Sparrows Point, Maryland. Completed 16 April 1941 as Robin Doncaster for Seas Shipping Co Inc. To MoWT 16 April 1941 and renamed Empire Curlew. To USMC 17 April 1942, documented under U.S. registry and renamed Robin Doncaster 16 May 1942. Conversion to a transport ship by Sullivan Drydock & Repair Co, New York was completed in January 1944, operated by U.S. War Shipping Administration. To USMC for reconversion in 4 April 1946. Purchased by Seas Shipping Co Inc 10 February 1947. Sold to Flying Gull Inc in June 1957 and renamed Flying Gull. Sold to American Export Lines Inc in 29 September 1962 with corporate owner changed to American Export Isbranden Lines, Inc. on 8 June 1963. Sold Ferrostar Enterprises, Inc. 21 May 1968 then to Eckhardt & Co. for scrapping in Spain.
