The first image here - from Peter Pearsall, USFWS - is not a rusty crayfish; it is a signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus. Can we delete/remove this image from the article? It is a misidentification. Pacifastacus (talk) 16:11, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
- Just following up here: the first image on this article from Peter Pearsall does not appear to be a rusty crayfish. There are no black and red rings to the tip of the chelae. There are not tubercles on the chelae or claws consistent with most Faxonius crayfish species; rather, these claws are more consistent with the morphology of crayfish in the family Astacidae like the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus. The image does not show other identifying features of a rusty crayfish like the red or rust-colored spots on the side of the carapace. The figure caption lists the former (Orconectes) rather than current (Faxonius) scientific name per the taxonomic revision of Crandall and de Grave 2017 (doi:10.1093/jcbiol/rux070). The image has been used by management agencies on social media as representative of rusty crayfish when it shows no identifying morphological or life color features of this species - the inclusion of the image here is leading to misidentification or misinformation about this important, invasive organism.
