I removed the merge notices from both the Far Eastern Federal District and Russian Far East articles (it was actully me who split them in two in the first place some time ago). Why it is true that both terms apply to the same territory, the first, however, is a unit of administrative division, and the second a historio-geographic term. Russian Far East will always stay the same, while the Federal District can be changed any day or abolished all together. The difference here is approximately the same as between the Kamchatka Peninsula and Kamchatka Oblast.

Please let me know if you have questions. Thanks.—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 13:25, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

I am afraid that the current article describes more the current fed district than to the historical notion of "Dalnij Vostok" ("Far East"). The history section would be handy here. mikka (t) 9 July 2005 04:46 (UTC)

RFE vs. federal district

Please note that Russian Far East refers to the historical territory, while Far Eastern Federal District is merely an administrative division, and fairly recent at that. The first one is history, the second one—politics. Please do not merge them again.—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 18:25, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

- it should be merged in my opnion--Quandapanda (talk) 23:33, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

It would help if you could explain why, in your opinion, they should be merged. It's not obvious how one can justify merging a historical term with a Putin institution which is not even fifteen years old yet.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); April 1, 2013; 12:01 (UTC)

Buryats

In the part about the indigenous populations, Buryats should be added. They have been there historically. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.120.161.17 (talk) 21:14, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

East Asia?

Somehow, this is included in discussions of East Asia. I'm not an expert on Russia, and I don't recall any specifics that would make it part of the region culturally. Politically, there is the Russia/China border and the sometimes violent history of Manchuria, but other than that, I'm drawing a blank. On the off chance that someone comes by and sees this, and knows something I'm missing, could they place it in the article, (and ideally, leave me a message on my user talk?) Thanks, Sven Manguard Talk 03:10, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

The Wikipedia article on East Asia states that "East Asia borders Siberia and the Russian Far East", implying that the Russian Far East is not part of East Asia. 2600:4041:5b26:3e00:6029:1b8:8205:4028 00:44, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
