I find the tone of this question insensitive and disrespectful to Indian Christians. Anyway, in an interview with desi-tv, he mentioned that both his parents were of the Anglo-Indian mix (his dad being from Bombay and his mom from Calcutta), so he's a mix between two Anglo-Indians. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.141.162.244 (talk) 23:27, January 15, 2006 (UTC)
Answer:Russell Peters is most likely his stage name, not his legal name. There are plenty of famous people out there who don't use their actual names in the public domain (i.e.: the Rock, Madonna, etc.). I'm sure his real name would be somewhat more difficult for English speakers to pronounce, so it makes sense to choose an easier stage name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Redguard~enwiki (talkcontribs) 00:49, October 18, 2005 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure Russell Peters is his real name, I remember him saying that in a stand-up routine. I don't know why he was named that way though. Osprey39 20:26, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
Yes Russell Peters IS his real name. Russell is Anglo-Indian, meaning that he also has some British (or other European background in his family tree). Thus the reason for the European last name. It's not uncommon for an Indian to have an European last name; remember, it is a former British colony. 65.92.112.83 19:17, 28 October 2005 (UTC) Dave

MARCH 23, 2006 - To whoever reads this.....Russell Peters IS his real name, absolutely, completely. I have seen his drivers license...his parents names that he mentions are their real names too...none of it is made up AT ALL.....

He is a Roman Catholic and was never a Hindu...where do you find this information? He is not enganged to 'Gloria' or a white woman...either... --Lfern 19:26, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Could you provide some sources for this information? --Mosquitopsu 02:10, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
    • Sources: I know Russell personally...I showed him the website and he couldn't believe it....he asked me to change it...--Lfern 16:30, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

False? Racist? What is this?

Russell Peters tends to curry leaves? enjoys eating curry and rice? someone please verify this! or i'll get rid of it! In fact, someone please verify this entire last paragraph! A lot of it seems made up; it isn't credible, at least. Please update this to a higher standard of quality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.248.118.194 (talk) 18:53, December 11, 2005‎

POV

"He explores race in a way that is fresh and creative" -- How POV is that?? That paragraph sounds like it was taken from his website. Can someone fix this page? I would but I don't know anything about this guy. Wikipedia brown 19:23, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

"...in a way that is rarely offensive and includes many hilarious impressions. He explores race in a way that is fresh and creative. He also has excellent imitations of voices of people of different cultures."

This is pure opinion. I'm not saying a disagree with what it states but this can not be considered fact. This should be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Willprich (talkcontribs) 03:17, February 4, 2006 (UTC)

It's really POV. I think what he says can definitely be interpreted as *highly* offensive to people who take it seriously. "Indians make shitty slaves." While I personally find it hilarious in context, going up to someone and saying that would definitely get you pegged as a racist. Gruu 01:44, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

We all know he's joking (except for some parts =P) so it really isnt that offensive unless he uses it in a certain matter. Jaewonnie (talk) 19:38, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

DVD

Apparently he has his own Comedy Now! DVD, with like four performances in it, as was just told on a commercial (The Comedy Network). Should this be mentioned? --Von 09:30, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

MARCH 23, 2006 - Russell has no part of this DVD, whatsoever...he recorded a DVD that will be released in June, 2006. The DVD that is currently on sale has nothing to do with Russell besides the fact that it's his work...they did not contact him, parts of this DVD are available all over the internet to download...DO NOT buy this DVD, as the proceeds do not go to Russell...check his official website for updates as to when the DVD will be released. --Lfern 19:26, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Sources

I contacted Russell Peter's management through the official website (Clayton Peters). This was the reply I recieved:

Thanks for your email.

In answer to your questions, please note:

1) Russell Peters is his real name. This is our family name, which we
can trace back through our father who was born in Bombay and his
father who was born in Madras. We are Anglo-Indians - a distinct
Indian community, who's history goes back many generations to when
   the British first occupied India.

British males would inter-marry local Indian women and over time, our
community was formed. As is the case, when the male is of European
ancestry that the family name became and English or Anglo name.
(Please note that when the female is of European or British ancestry,
the child is Eurasian as opposed to Anglo-Indian).

Anglo-Indians were never regarded by Indians as being Indian and never
regarded as being English, by the English. Most Anglo-Indian customs
- afternoon tea, a unique diet (curries on one day, roast chicken or
steak on the next), strong social and community bonds - could be more
closely connected to Britain then to India.

Anglo-Indians are Christian (not converts mind you) for generations.
Our first language in the home in India is / was, English.
Anglo-Indians traditionally married fellow Anglo-Indians, due to the
cultural distinctions of this community.

Both of our parents are Anglo-Indian and both of their parents were
Anglo-Indian as well.

Anglo-Indians come in all shades of brown, from dark to blond-haired
and blue-eyed.

Anglo-Indians are a community in decline, some say a remnant of the
Raj, and the community will all but disappear in a generation or two,
due to inter-marriage globally.

Other notable Anglo-Indians include - Engleburt Humperdink, (Sir)
Cliff Richard and Myrna Loy. Ben Kingsley is of a British mother and
Indian father, and therefore considered Eurasian.

2) Russell is not engaged. He was engaged once and not to anyone
named Gloria. However, we do have an Aunty Gloria, but Russell
has never considered marrying her. Russell is very much single
and now resides in the Hollywood Hills at his new home there.

3) Russell is Catholic, as am I and our mother. Our father and his
family were primarily Anglican (Church or England). Our Christian
roots go back generations. However, it's only logical that at
some point in our family tree, someone was either Hindu or Muslim.

Please feel free to contact me if you require any further
clarification or fact checking on Russell.

Thank you for your interest and your desire for accuracy on this
matter. These are very important points and we're more than happy to
educate and clarify anyone who's interested.

Kindly forward the link on Russell when the article is complete.

Thank You,
Clayton Peters

Use of foul language to get laughs:

I have noticed that Russell has no problem using profanity even if there are kids in the audience. I saw him in a show in DC and there was a 13 year old kid in the show. first of all, his parents should be stripped and spanked for bringing their teenage boy to the show, when it is clearly for mature audience. Russell picked the parents apart, humiliated them in front of their kid. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.136.233.38 (talk) 14:10, March 22, 2006‎‎

Most 13-year old kids are farmilliar with simple swears and even sex. But picking on a kid on his parents does seem kind of scumbagish. --Von 03:31, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Listen, first of all, with most stand-up comedians, you will get people pulled out of an audience and used as part of an act, but this does not necissarily seem like it is picking on a child and his parents. Secondly, he is Thirteen years old, I am Thirteen years old at my age we are mature enough to handle sexual references and swearing. Another thing is that i think his parents would have considered the type of audience this was aimed for and if they choose to take their son to an event like this, then that is their decision and it should be respected. Besides kids love to see their parents humiliated. :P K-man-1 20:28, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

You think the parents should be "stripped and spanked" but you're mad because they were "humiliated"? MrBlondNYC 07:56, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Added 2 categories

Added 2 categories Indian Christians and Anglo-Indian.--71.30.188.223 03:53, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Category:Catholic comedians is at present for comedians who are known for their Catholicism or whose humor involves Catholicism to a degree. It's even possible, if unlikely, that a non-Catholic could be placed in the category if their humor revolves enough around Catholicism and Catholic culture. (For example I'd considered adding the atheistic Julia Sweeney because of several specials she has done, but admittedly decided against it due to possible confusion) It has this strict definition in part because it was nearly deleted. I'm uncertain if this individual fits the category as it is currently defined.--T. Anthony 15:10, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Catholic comedians? you are serious? Where s the Catholicism? I would write racist comedian. He offends chinese, africans, italians, jews... and honestly speaking, he's everything but a catholic comedian. Jack 00:57, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Toronto

I think there should be some mention in this article about how everybody famous in Canada nowadays seems to be from Toronto (or within several hours drive thereof, ie: South-Central Canada). It's like Canada has become some banana-republic -- one gigantic massive central metropolis, containing a large per-cent age of the nation's population ...

... surrounded by a million square miles of jungle and rednecks.

Canada is now like Peru or Chile or Ecuador; there's .. like .. the biggest city? And the 2nd biggest city just a couple hours away? In a country of 9 million square kilometres? And then nothing else ..

Pretty sad actually. I mean, Russell Peters is fabulous and I love his comedy (I too am from an 'ethnic' background), but more and more, Canada is becoming centred into South-Central Canada, "Upper and Lower Canada", the Quebec-City-Windsor urban corridor of Southern Ontario and Southern Quebec.

With the rest of Canada simply being "hewers of wood and drawers of water". (Even though it's that hewing and drawing of natural resources in the hinterland that puts food on the table of Canadians; not friggin blackberries).

Unlike the United States.

Where 40 states have auto factories (ours are all concentrated within 4 hours of Toronto). And where America's space program is spread throughout its hinterland (ours is in Montreal, just a scant few hours from Toronto). And Hollywood is thousands of kilometres from New York, the biggest city (ours is in the biggest city). I could go on but I won't. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Atikokan (talkcontribs) 04:36, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

As much as I'd love to engage in this debate, my editorial sensibilities are stopping me. So the answer is no, I don't think it should be mentioned in this article (or any other). Random89 20:41, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Not that this belongs in a comedian's talk page, but "hewing and drawing of natural resources" is not what "puts food on the table of Canadians." Mining, oil, forestry, etc add up to only 6.9% of Canada's GDP. Canadian GDP by industry - 173.33.192.255 (talk) 08:19, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Dan Nainan

Why is there a reference to so-called 'comedian' Dan Nainan on Russell's page? Why would anyone connect Dan Nainan and Russell? This is a Russell Peters page, not a Dan Nainan page. Dan Nainan should stop trying to connect himself to Russell. Russell isn't even friends with Dan Nainan anymore because of some stuff that was posted on Nainan's website about Russell. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rpfan (talkcontribs) 19:58, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Whether or not they are friends is irrelevant. However, unless reliable sources can be provided linking the 2, edits adding that info should be reverted on sight. I have warned the IP editor at his talk page. Random89 19:45, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

More comments left on my talk page by 207.172.86.240 (talk · contribs):

There was never anything posted on Dan Nainan's page that was in any way inflammatory or derogatory towards Russell. Whoever is saying that is making a complete falsehood. Nainan's page has remained relatively static for the last several years, except for the occasional update for tour dates. There isn't really any material of any editorial nature on his page. You can verify this by going to the Internet archive and looking at the history of Nainan's webpage since its inception.

Nainan constantly states that he has achieved success because of the help he received from Russell, and this can be verified in many different interviews from many different bona fide publications.

Also, it should be noted that Dan Nainan produced two shows that were instrumental milestones in Russell's rise to stardom. First was his show at the Apollo, which was a watershed event because he was the first South Asian to sell out the Apollo. Nainan also performed at that event. Secondly, Nainan produced Russell's show at UCLA Royce Hall in 2005, where he was first seen by Creative Artists Agency to whom he was ultimately signed.

Whoever is denying any connection between these two comedians is spreading falsehoods for whatever reasons and motivations they might have, and anyone can verify that Nainan and Peters have worked closely together by viewing the Youtube clip that we sent you earlier, where Russell states in his own words that Nainan is a good friend of his and that he brings Nainan on the road with him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.172.86.240 (talkcontribs)

The word 'earned'

It just seems wrong to say Russell Peters "earned" $10 million, this is really stretching any definition of the word 'earned' because obviously he did NOT earn it, he just stands on a stage and talks. Changed "Russell Peters is an Indian Canadian..." to "Russell Peters is a Canadian..." He is Canadian in terms of nationality. His ethnic backround is discussed later in the article.
